Take That tickets top a million wacko surprised

Date published: 15/12/2008

TAKE THAT have added another date to their sell-out summer tour which will take ticket sales over the one million mark.

And the buyer of the millionth ticket, for the concert at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, will win a prize to include being personally presented with a commemorative disc by band members.

The Circus Live tour broke all UK box office records when tickets went on sale in October. It became the fasting selling tour in UK history, toppling Michael Jackson’s 1987 “Bad” Tour from the top spot.

Nineteen stadium dates have now all sold out, with more than 950,000 tickets snapped up by fans.

Tickets for the newly added final show, on June 17, will go on sale next Tuesday at 9am.

It’s the first time the Millennium Stadium has been re-booked for consecutive shows since 2001 when ex–band member Robbie Williams sold out a July 14 concert and re-opened the following night.

TICKETS for Take That’s second Cardiff show sold out in four hours.

Around 100 fans braved the wind and drizzle to be first in line to snap up seats for the group’s newly announced show in the Welsh capital on June 17.

An estimated 60,000 fans will flock to the city’s Millennium Stadium to see the world famous boyband when they perform for the first time on June 16 – and Ticketline UK managing director, Tim Rich, expects the same number to watch Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Howard Donald when they perform for a second time.

Concerts threat over police costs
From left to right: Mark Owen, Jason Orange, Howard Donald and Gary Barlow
The Millennium Stadium will stage two Take That shows in June

Concerts at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium could be under threat if South Wales Police pursue a plan to charge promoters full policing costs.

Chief constable Barbara Wilding said the practice of charging organisers was approved in England in 2005 and she was bringing the force into line.

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) executive board will discuss the issue later.

It is thought the WRU would favour focusing on rugby rather than concerts if costs increase significantly.

Business leaders in Cardiff say jobs could be at risk if concerts, such as the two sell-out shows Take That are staging in the stadium in June, are no longer held in the city.

Event promoters have also warned that large concerts could be staged outside Wales.

But Ms Wilding said event organisers should pay for policing outside the stadium, as well as inside, a cost which the stadium currently meets.

She said the changes are necessary with the force facing a £9m funding gap this year and up to £14m next year.

The new charging policy will come into force in April 2009 and will mean special policing services required to stage major events such as football matches and concerts, will be met by the promoters organising the event.

It is understood the executive board of the WRU will look at a number of options when it meets to discuss the matter later.

They include reducing the amount of money it invests into rugby, charging more to customers buying tickets and focusing only on rugby and not staging other events at the stadium.

It is understood the latter would be the preferred option.

But businesses in Cardiff say non-rugby events bring millions of pounds into the local economy, create jobs and help promote the city and Wales to the world.

Russell Goodway, a former chief executive of Cardiff Chamber of Commerce and ex-leader of Cardiff council, said he believed now was not the time "to play politics with people's jobs and people's lives".

"I'm really disappointed and really sorry that the chief constable appears to see the Millennium Stadium and the capital city generally as a liability rather than the very valuable asset that it is," he said.

Promoters will go elsewhere... they would look at Bristol, they would take events away from Cardiff
Phil Hayes, music promoter

"Thousands of jobs in Cardiff and south Wales depend on the Millennium Stadium and the business that it brings to the city - it's probably in excess of £1m a week over the course of a year to Cardiff's economy."

Dermot Keegan, general manager of the Holiday Inn in Cardiff and former chairman of the Cardiff Hoteliers Association, said: "It certainly affects our business significantly and if we were to lose events like that I can certainly see a big impact in the challenging economy already on not only what we pay in tax but on who we employ."

He urged interested parties to "get around a table and thrash [the situation] out".

"I know that in the Birmingham region, if somebody said to the Birmingham economy all the business from the NEC is about to disappear, you would soon have MPs, Westminster and other parties around a table fairly quickly," he said.

Phil Hayes, a music promoter based in Liverpool, added that the extra charges could mean concerts go to venues outside Wales.

"Promoters will go elsewhere," he said.

"They would look at Bristol, they would take events away from Cardiff. They would simply look at the economics."

Capital city recognition

Ms Wilding said the force received no financial assistance from the assembly government in recognition of it serving a capital city, unlike in Scotland where the Lothian and Borders Police receive a grant from the Scottish government for policing Edinburgh.

She said with precept funding, raised from the council tax, the force was facing a "worst case scenario" of a £14m funding deficit.

The South Wales Police Authority was unable to reach a decision on Tuesday about the precept funding, raised from the council tax, for 2009/10.

A Welsh Assembly Government spokesperson said: "South Wales Police Authority is funded in common with other police authorities in England and Wales through a common funding formula arrangement based on need.

"This takes account of policing needs in respect of both urban and rural areas. The formula includes a component to take account of special events.

"All local authorities including police authorities should manage their resources as effectively and efficiently as possible."

Take That keen for Corden tour slot
Saturday, June 6 2009, 15:14 BST

By Daniel Kilkelly, Entertainment Reporter

Take That have invited James Corden to make a guest appearance on their current tour.

The group want Corden to sing with them on stage when they perform at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on June 16 and 17.

Speaking to The Mirror, band member Mark Owen confirmed that he is "keen to get [James] involved" later this month.

He added: "We will get him a special costume. It will be amazing and a big hit with fans."

Corden is currently filming the final series of BBC sitcom Gavin & Stacey in Cardiff.

Take That's 'Circus' tour kicked off at Sunderland's Stadium of Light last night.

James Corden set to be the new Robbie Williams on Take That tour

James Corden once joked about becoming the next Robbie Williams - and now, thanks to us, it looks like he's going to be.

Gavin and Stacey star James is set to get a guest slot on stage with Take That. He is filming a new series of hit sitcom Gavin and Stacey in Cardiff when the quartet appear at the Millennium Stadium.

Now the guys are in talks to have James, 30, introduce them on stage to his favourite track, Shine. Mark told us: "James is hilarious and a Take That fan, and you girls say he can sing, so yes, we're keen to get him involved.

"We will get him a special costume.

Even you two can march up and down banging your drums?" Us bang our own drums? No sense of rhythm? Back of the stage? Er, cheers Gary.

Coach firm’s greatest day as it lands Take That gig

Jun 10 2009 by Emily Woodrow, South Wales Echo

IT only takes a minute, as the band’s song goes, but a South Wales coach firm will be transporting Take That to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff for their forthcoming gigs later this month.

But the popular boy band may have to have patience, as the Edwards Coaches will also be responsible for collecting them from the airport and returning them there after their whirlwind appearance in the capital.

The coach company’s staff, especially the female ones, are eagerly awaiting the big day.

Commercial director Jason Edwards said: “There’s definitely going to be a buzz in here when the lads arrive.

“I’m sure there will be a few of our female staff screaming, as there were when I told them we’d got the contract. They’ve all been asking to be couriers on the bus so they can get the pop stars tea and coffee.”

The family-run transport company, which was thefirst Welsh company to win UK coach of the year, was asked by Take That’s promoters to be the band’s main transport for their trip to the city.

Mr Edwards, 38, of Llantwit Fardre, Pontypridd, said: “We were shocked to find out we’d been chosen to escort them.

“We’ve been doing this for a long time, it’s in our blood, so it’s always nice when people contact us.

“We’ll be picking them up from the airport when they arrive, taking them to their hotel, taking them back and forth from the Millennium Stadium and then returning them to the airport after the gigs.

“We’ve done a lot of prestigious coach hire work in Cardiff but nothing in the pop industry.

“We’ve transported politicians, government figures, royalty, and even the Rugby World Cup, but nothing in the entertainment sector so this is something different for us to deal with.”

Edwards Coaches have no plans to do anything special for the famous singers, and will be treating it just like a normal job.

“However we’ll be using one of our best drivers, Jeff, who was selected on merit and has been with us a long time,” said Mr Edwards.

“It’s his turn to do it and I know he’ll do a good job.

“The band will be travelling in the top-class executive coaches with first-class reclining seating and DVD players to keep them amused.

“However, even though they are the most well-known passengers we’ve ever had, we’ll be sticking by our ‘whatever happens on the coach stays on the coach’ motto.

“What Take That get up to on there is their business.”

Robbie will return one day, say Take That
Jun 12 2009 by Karen Price, Western Mail

After months of waiting, Take That fans will be treated to two gigs at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff next week. Band member Mark Owen takes time out of rehearsals to talk to Karen Price about the shows, family life and a certain Mr Williams

IT’S the day before the most anticipated date in the music calendar and Mark Owen is trying to keep the nerves at bay.

Just 24 hours after our phone chat, Owen and the other members of Take That staged the world premiere of their much-anticipated tour, The Circus. And just like their massive comeback three years ago, which saw the chart-toppers give a blistering performance at the Millennium Stadium, their latest show has gone down a storm.

Critics at the opening gig at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland last weekend described the performance as “a real pleasure” and “pure theatre”.

All that, and there wasn’t even a mention of the R word in any of the reviews I scoured.

Yes it seems that Mark Owen, Gary Barlow, Jason Orange and Howard Donald, are back at the very top and they don’t need any help from former bandmate Robbie Williams thank you very much.

When the tour was announced last year, there was much talk about whether Williams would reunite with the band or not.

Three years ago he was represented on stage during the comeback tour as a hologram. But it doesn’t appear that he’s referenced this time, even though the boys are all on talking terms once again.

“No, he’s not going to come,” says Owen, 37, when I ask the inevitable question about whether Williams will join the 2009 tour.

“I’m so glad Robbie is back in contact and we see him now. We talked last year of him maybe coming (on tour). We were all a bit giddy about seeing each other but it’s not possible at the moment. Rob’s doing a new record. But it (reunion) will happen one day.”

When we speak, the father-of-two is looking forward to the world premiere of the tour the following night, but he admits the nerves are kicking in.

“I have been really good all week and quite calm but I can feel myself starting to tense up a little bit. I woke up this morning and felt a bit...” he trails off.

“Sick?” I offer.

“Yes, sick,” he laughs.

“The nice thing about the first venue is you’re in there three or four days before, so we’ve done most of our sound checks and stuff.

“I’m hoping not to go in too early before the show. I’ve got the kids coming up today with my lady so I probably won’t get any sleep tonight.”

The tour opened just two nights after Britney Spears launched her series of London gigs as part of her tour – coincidentally also called Circus. But it seems Take That had no reason to worry about any competition.

As one critic, who has seen both shows, stated: “The boys’ show makes their rival’s look like an end-of-pier performance. Britney has a cast of 50? Pah, Take That have over 200. She rides an umbrella, they have a hot air balloon hovering above, but hitch a lift from the centre of the stadium to their big top tent on a 20ft-high, mechanical elephant with glowing eyes whose tail is an upside down woman with hair extensions. Heck, they even learned to ride unicycles.”

Owen admits: “It’s a big show – the biggest we have done, or it feels like it is.

“There are 58 trucks. On the last tour there were 30.”

Those trucks are carrying a selection of outrageous outfits – the boys don amateurish face paint and clowns’ outfits for one section – and some magnificent sets, including the hot air balloon.

But Owen plays down the costumes.

“There are not as many as in the past,” he says. “We’ve got an amazing wardrobe. People have been coming in and making stuff for us. We’re not like the Spice Girls so it isn’t all by John Galliano. But they are all beautiful.”

While it’s all well and good to put on an extravaganza – what about the main ingredient: the music?

“We are not one of those bands who don’t play the back catalogue. We think we’ve got a good set list. I think we’ve got the balance right,” says Owen. “Gary’s slightly concerned we are playing one too many off the new record. I said, ‘It will be great. Don’t worry. Just smile and sing and shut up’!”

Take That originally dominated the charts from 1991 to 1996 when they sold 19 million records. They announced their split seven months after Williams quit the band in July 1995.

Following a TV documentary in 2005, in which they aired their views on the split, the post-Williams line-up announced they were reforming to tour in 2006. The rest is history. Now they are bigger and better than ever, notching up more chart-toppers with the albums Beautiful World and The Circus and their current tour is said to be “the fastest-selling in UK history”.

While all of them, except Orange, are now fathers, it seems they are enjoying life in a band even more second time round – mainly because they are not afraid to speak their minds and want to be the best possible for their fans.

“We get on really well, better than we ever have done. But we are not afraid to say: ‘That’s not working.’ We are more honest. We all really care. We really care so much,” says Owen.

Due to their personal commitments – Owen is dad to Elwood, who’s nearly three, and six-month-old Willow – their tours are now condensed. They also travel with old friends.

“There’s a really nice atmosphere. We have a really great crew. Everyone started with us back in ’91 or ’92. There’s a real family atmosphere back stage. Everyone wants it to go well. There’s a crew of 238 and you don’t want to let them down.”

When we speak, The Circus show isn’t the finely-tuned spectacular that fans in Sunderland – and earlier this week, Coventry – enjoyed.

“I hope it’s going to be alright. At the moment we’re coming in at about six hours,” laughs Owen of the gig.

“There’s been a few hiccups – technical things really. We’re hoping it’s going to be about an hour and 45 to two hours. We don’t want to go on too much. People get bored after that.”

I don’t think there’s much chance of that happening. There is a variety of support acts – from James Morrison and The Script to Lady Ga Ga and The Saturdays – to warm up the crowds, mainly made up of 30-something women. There is also little known singer Gary Go, who Owens tells me “we have been championing”.

So which member of Take That gets most nervous before performing live in front of 60,000 fans?

“I think on the outside it’s probably me or Jay. Gary on the outside is very cool usually. We are all getting a bit nervous about it. I’m trying not to think about it.

“But I love touring as long, as I’m looking after myself; and as long as you’re feeling strong, it’s great. The worst thing that can happen is you wake up and go: ‘Oh my throat’s sore.’ That’s my one dread. It would break my heart if I were to lose my voice.”

Owen is not sure how long his children will join him on tour.

“It’s quite disrupting for them. Elwood knows daddy’s in a band but he thinks all daddys are in bands.

“The other day we saw a male friend in the street and he told us he was going to work. Elwood said: ‘What’s your band called’?”

After the hysteria of being in a band first time round, when Take That disbanded, Owen managed to lead a relatively quiet life, despite continuing as a solo artist and even winning Celebrity Big Brother.

But although Take That are now one of the world’s biggest bands once again, Owen says the fame doesn’t bother him and he manages to lead a relatively “normal” life away from the public glare.

“It’s not too bad at all. Everyone’s got their own lives now. You don’t get people outside your door. It’s fine.”

As far as Take That are concerned, will they now be like a new version of the Rolling Stones and go on forever or do they plan to bow out at the top?

“We just want to get this tour right and get through it but everyone’s quite up for a new record,” says Owen.

Surely music to their screaming fans’ ears...

Take That @ Millennium Stadium - Description

Following the phenomenal success of Beautiful World, Take That regrouped in April 2008 at SARM Studios in Notting Hill, west London, and began work on a new album, just the four of them in a room.

“For the first time ever really, I feel like I’m in a real band,” says Mark. “I’m really proud of this record. It feels like a proper album. I think it’s better than Beautiful World. I think it’s a record for record buyers.”

“I’m grateful every morning to be in this position,” says Gary. “I feel better about it than I ever have because everyone else feels better about it. I’m in my element, big time. And I think we all are.”

Now Take That are taking their new album on tour around the UK.

Take That fans swindled in internet scam

Take That fans swindled in internet scam

TAKE That fans are ticket-less and hundreds of pounds out of pocket after falling victim to an apparent internet scam.

Nicola Short and her daughter Charly will miss out on the boy band’s massive Millennium Stadium gigs this week because their tickets failed to materialise.

Nicola, 40, booked tickets for tomorrow night’s show the moment they went on sale to give her 11-year-old daughter a dream Christmas present.

But just days before Take That’s sell-out shows she had to tell her heartbroken daughter that they would not be seeing her favourite band.

“She’s taken it very well,” said Nicola. “I can tell she’s upset but she doesn’t want to seem spoilt so she’s putting a brave face on it.”

Nicola paid £280 for four tickets for the concert with her friend Sharon Jones, 35, and her seven-year-old daughter Rhian.

The pair, who work together at Cardiff Storage, bought the tickets when they went on sale in October, from the website takethattour.com.

When the tickets did not arrive, Nicola, who lives in Risca, discovered the website no longer existed.

She said: “It looked professional. After I paid for the tickets I got a confirmation e-mail saying that I should contact them if they didn’t arrive five days before the concert.

“When I tried to e-mail them the address no longer existed.

“It is devastating. I made a special certificate for Charly’s Christmas present saying: ‘You and your mum are invited to see Take That at the Millennium Stadium.’

“Now I have had to tell her we won’t be going.”

Ken Sullivan, 52, had planned to give his wife Beverley two Take That tickets for her 51st birthday. The electrical wholesales manager, who lives in Tremorfa, said: “I spent £119 on the tickets.

“You see these programmes on the television warning you about these scams but you never expect to be taken in.”

Ken has since bought two more tickets from an approved retailer.

UK law states that every company should list its registration number, place of registration and registration address on its website. If that information is not visible, either at the bottom of the page or in the about us section, it is a tell-tale sign the site could be run by an illegal company, the website theregister.co.uk said.

The takethattour.com website no longer exists.

Coach firm’s greatest day as it lands Take That gig

Take That’s ‘Circus’ rolls into Cardiff

“BOY-BAND” hysteria will hit Wales tonight as Take That’s biggest tour arrives in the capital.

Fresh from their appearance at Dublin’s Croke Park, Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Howard Donald and Jason Orange hope to wow fans with their most elaborate concert to date.

The four-piece will dazzle on a £10m stage at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, performing acrobatic tricks, in-keeping with their latest chart-topping album, Circus.

As well as giving renditions of their newest hits, the group will perform a selection of songs from their earliest days of fame, and lead vocalist Barlow is expected to appear on stage riding a tiny circus bicycle.

Stadium manager Gerry Toms said: “It’s a very impressive show, there’s no doubt about it. People walking away from it on Tuesday and Wednesday nights will say, ‘that was well worth seeing’.”

Alex Luff, the Cardiff venue’s sales manager, added: “Right now is one of the busiest times for music at the stadium, with the set for Oasis being taken down and Take That’s bespoke set being put up, all before we welcome U2 back to the stadium in August.

“Over the next couple of days, we hope to welcome a pan-UK, and perhaps a pan-European audience, which further showcases the stadium as a must-play venue.”

Fans of the band, which reformed in 2006, began to arrive in the Welsh capital last night, and many were keen to secure a spot close to the stage ahead of the band’s appearance at 8.45pm.

Around 120,000 tickets have sold for the tour’s two-date leg in Wales – a record only equalled by Take That’s former band mate Robbie Williams in 2001.

South Wales Police yesterday issued a warning ahead of the much-anticipated show, asking fans to arrive early and plan their journeys with care.

A force spokeswoman said: “We anticipate that there will be a lot of people travelling to Cardiff to watch Take That at the Millennium Stadium and we would ask them to use public transport and plan their journeys in and out of the city centre.”

Westgate Street next to the 60,000 capacity ground, will be closed ahead of gates opening for the lavish show at 4pm.

Barriers will prevent motorists using the road between 3.30pm and 11pm on both Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

Arriva Trains Wales also urged revellers to plan their trips with precision.

The firm’s special events manager Simon Turton said: “No engineering works have been planned, but we would advise fans to check their last train times and allow themselves plenty of time to arrive at the show.”

A queuing and barrier system will be in place at Cardiff Central train station, and Mr Turton said fans should allow time for delays at both, even if planning journeys to coincide with support pop-rock acts, Gary Go and James Morrison, on stage at around 6.30pm.

Tonight’s concert will mark Take That’s second Cardiff performance within the space of three years, and according to reviews, fans can expect to witness the group’s most elaborate show yet.

Reviews have hinted at appearances from jugglers, trapeze artists and tight-rope walkers, and a set list including Take That classics, A Million Love Songs and Could it be Magic?

Last week, Owen told the Western Mail that the set was one of the grandest ever created by the band.

The 37-year-old said: “It’s a big show, the biggest we have done.

“We think we’ve got a good set list and got the balance right,” he added.
