Sunderland surfed on a wave of magic as Take That kicked off their Circus tour at the Stadium of Light.

Speculation had built up all week as to what the show would entail after 59 Take That trucks arrived at the stadium last week.

As doors opened at 4pm, thousands of excited fans flocked into the stadium to be warmed up by Gary Go and James Morrison who were both outstanding.

As the eager crowd waited in anticipation of what lay before them, a Mexican wave started.

Then a magical mist descended on to the stadium as carnival music poured out from the speakers.

Down from the stage came a host of circus performers who made their way on to a train cart to the centre circle.

As they huddled together, covering the circle with giant balloons, Take That rose up the circle and the crowd went wild.

The Greatest Day was belted out by the band, who were dressed in Military style jackets.

As the audience rose to their feet, Take That took everyone on a trip down memory lane with some of their earlier songs including Could It Be Magic.

Water fountains then spurted up from the stage and nothing could have prepared Sunderland for what it saw next.

The stage setting unfolded and a giant, mechanical elephant lifted the band into the air.

It headed towards the main stage, which was filled with gymnasts, acrobats and hula ladies.

The visual effects were spectacular, but one of the evening's highlights was watching Jason Orange take lead role when singing Wooden Boat.

It's not very often that you see Take That do a lone-band performance with just them on stage, each with a musical instrument in hand. It was poignant to watch.

Another clever touch was the red and white striped costumes, and Gary Barlow was met with cheers from the crowd as he mentioned Sunderland's favourite colours – much to the dislike of some Newcastle fans who were among the crowd – although he put a smile on their faces when he mentioned they were changing into black and white later.

As darkness began to fall, Sunderland was illuminated with a shimmering light display.
Circus performers exploded back on to the stage and Take That rode down to the centre circle on unicycles.

Mark Owen got off to a wobbly start and after attempting to redeem himself, fell flat on his face. And it was clear that Gary wanted to save any embarrassment as he peddled down on a kiddie's bike – priceless.

Relight My Fire, originally by singer Loleatta Hollaway, proved to be another golden moment in the show, which drew to a close with the song.
But as the stars above the Stadium of Light twinkled, the audience whistled and cheered for more.

And very fittingly, Take That sang Rule the World as fireworks exploded into the sky. Breathtaking.

It was a night to remember as more than 50,000 Take That fans danced and sang with the band.

Sunderland became the focus of the music world as the four lads kicked off their sell-out tour at the Stadium of Light, with the party fever set to carry on to tonight's gig.

Thousands braved the rain and queued outside the stadium before doors opened at 4pm. Some had even camped out overnight.

A sense of anticipation had engulfed Sunderland in the week leading up to what was the city's biggest gig for years.

And the polished boy band did not disappoint, relighting the fire in many a Take That lover's heart with classics from The Greatest Day to Could It Be Magic.

As they left the stadium exhausted but ecstatic, some told the Echo the show was the best they had ever seen.

With the promise of more tonight – and Manchester supergroup Oasis performing at the stadium on Wednesday – music lovers on Wearside have lapped up a feast of entertainment never to be forgotten.

RELEGATION jitters over, Sunderland’s Stadium of Light celebrated a truly spectacular promotion last night.

A music promotion, bringing Take That to Wearside – followed by Oasis next week – is Premier League by any standards.

With the fabulous James Morrison thrown into the mix as a support act, Sunderland has pulled off a sensational hat-trick – and the crowd loved it.

They came armed with umbrellas and waterproofs after a day of rain, but the clouds cleared to let the evening sun reward Sunderland’s ambition.

Morrison on his own would have been well worth the price of a ticket. What a warm up act. By the time Take That took to the stage, the crowd was ready for an unforgettable night.

This was not just a concert – it was the night the circus came to town and brought with it a feast of musical and visual entertainment.

Opening with Greatest Day, Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Howard Donald sang and danced their way through the band’s best loved hits.

Could It Be Magic, Million Love Songs and Back For Good ensured the show kicked off in style.

The momentum never dropped on stage, in the crowd or in the air, as mesmerising trapeze artists and high-wire acts added to the spectacle.

Most memorably, a floating silver elephant carried the boys to the stage after the opening section on the middle of the Stadium of Light pitch.

The final sequence featured Patience, followed by Relight My Fire, Hold Up A Light and Rule The World.

Ahead of the show, frontman Barlow had told the region to get ready for the biggest party Sunderland had ever seen, calling their latest tour a dream come true.

He said: “This is a massive, massive tour and not just because of the amount of people, it’s the sheer size of the tour as well.

“It’s probably seven or eight times bigger than anything we’ve done before.”

And it was certainly a night that Sunderland will “Never Forget”.

Take That will play a second concert at the Stadium of Light tonight.

BOY band Take That rocked a crowd of thousands as they played a huge North East concert last night.

The heartthrobs were at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light, the only North venue to host the band on their record-selling 14-date UK tour.

The singers, who will play a second gig at the stadium tonight, brought hordes of screaming fans to the region.

One, Georgi Potts, 24, from Jesmond, Newcastle, said: “I’ve loved them since I was 10 years old but I was too young to see them, so I’m happy they’ve come back to the North East.”

Liam Snedden, 25, of Newcastle, said: “I only got my ticket last week and this is probably the only time I will ever get to see them live. I always sing Take That songs in karaoke.”

Meanwhile, Geordie pop princess Cheryl Cole and the girls were in Newcastle for the latest Girls Aloud concert at the Metro Radio Arena.

Thousands of fans could be seen converging on the venue to see their girl band heroes last night.
