Can you believe it's been more than twenty years since Take That first got together?

Formed in 1989 by then-manager Nigel Martin-Smith, Robbie, Gary, Jason, Howard and Mark have gone on to become of the most successful British pop acts of all time, selling in excess of 40 million records worldwide, achieving 27 UK Top 10 hits and scooping more awards than they probably know what to do with.

Their career has certainly had its ups and downs, of course - the band split in 1996, not long after Robbie's shock departure. However, proving that you can't keep a good group down, the lads reunited (without Robbie) in 2005 to record a documentary, release a Greatest Hits album and embark on their first tour in over a decade.

Such was the reaction to their reunion, that the group decided to record a new studio album. This proved to be a very wise decision, with the album Beautiful World proving to be a monumental success. Another album, The Circus, followed and proved to be just as popular.

After years of speculation, Robbie was finally reunited with the group in 2010. Their first joint effort in more than fifteen years, Progress, became another commercial and critical success, reaching No.1 on the album chart and selling more than two million copies in the UK alone.

While it remains to be seen whether Take That are truly (ahem) back for good, we're certainly enjoying seeing all five lads back on stage where they belong.

Jason Flemyng has revealed that he played a part in getting Take That singers Gary Barlow and Mark Owen to visit the X-Men: First Class set.

The actor, who plays Azazel in the superhero movie, said that director Matthew Vaughn wanted to meet the band when the pair were shooting Stardust in 2007.

Flemyng told Digital Spy: "Mark Owen's a mate of mine, and I took him down on Stardust and set him up with Matt. That worked really well.

"Matt wanted to meet [all of the Take That members], so I managed to do that."

Flemyng added that Vaughn was keen to have the boyband back on set for X-Men: First Class.

"Gary and Mark came down, and they loved being on set. They're like, 'Oh look, potatoes and chips and mints!'" he said.

"They love all that stuff... eating food out of polystyrene cartons, so it's fun. It's really nice that they've done that."

Take That provided Vaughn with the songs 'Rule the World' for Stardust and 'Love Love' for X-Men: First Class.

X-Men: First Class is out on Blu-ray and DVD now.

Click on any internet forum for Take That fans this week and you’ll be greeted with streams of emoticons. The little yellow circles posted by those lucky enough to have secured tickets for 2011’s reunion tour – the biggest sold-out tour in UK and Irish history – are jumping for joy, waving cheerleaders’ pompoms or flushing crimson with lust. Those posted by less fortunate fans are flinging desolate tears from their faces, like the hormonal teenagers these women probably were when the manufactured boy band first thrust their synchronised hips into the national consciousness with their cover of the 1975 Tavares hit It Only Takes a Minute back in 1992.

Those original fans – called “Thatters” – are now mostly in their late thirties and forties. Scanning through their internet exchanges, I see they’ve been sending their husbands and children to queue or phone up for tickets. Official vendors The Ticket Factory said that sales had exceeded the company’s previous record by more than 50 per cent. BT reported that the phone network carried between three and four times the normal number of calls.

As the diehards pitted themselves against the public for precious seats, one Thatter warmly congratulates another on scoring tickets for the Wembley show, adding: “And congrats on becoming a grandmother too!” How has the band inspired such undimmed passion in its earliest fans? And how has its rebranded 21st-century coalition won over legions of new, ticket-buying admirers?

I suspect the answer to the first question says more about women than it does about Take That. It springs from a theory I developed at a Barry Manilow concert in 2008. The women around me were in their fifties and sixties, and from the way they fanned their heaving bosoms I assumed that many had a thing for young Barry back in the Seventies. It was a stretch for me to imagine the camply attired, Tango-faced entertainer on the stage as an object of female desire, but these women still worshipped at his sequin-seamed shrine.

As with Cliff Richard, they loved his older, creakier incarnation with a profounder emotion than they had felt for the twinkly-eyed lad who had first caught their eyes. Since the Seventies, his songs had stayed by their sides for better or worse, in sickness and in health. He’d never reneged on his promise to offer them romance and passion whenever real life lacked it. So they humoured his every duff joke and awkward dance move like indulgent wives. As an audience, they all but pecked him on the cheek and handed him his golf bag.

У меня одна, что не поехал в тур в поддержку последнего альбома cry Конечно, все объяснимо, намечалось воссоединение с ребятами и все такое... Но мне было немного обидно, что Роб отнесся к своему альбому так пренебрежительно(

JLS, Olly Murs and Take That named ‘hardest-working acts’ of 2011
X Factor’s JLS and Olly Murs came top in the survey meaning that Take That took second place.

The survey was carried out by industry body PRS for Music to find which acts have headlined the most major venues in 2011 – Olly and JLS played 29 each.

Olly said it was “a real honour” to win the award, adding: “The last two years have been incredible for me – I’ve achieved so much and it’s great to be recognised for all the work I’ve put in. Thanks to everyone who’s come to see me play live – there’s lots more to come.”

A statement released by JLS said: “This is a great achievement and really goes to show how hard we have been working this year.”

The two acts pipped reformed man-band Take That to the top of the chart.

The five-piece, reunited with Robbie Williams, played to around 1.75 million people during their sell-out tour of the UK and Ireland that saw them play 28 major venues.

Other acts in the top 10 included Westlife and former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher’s new band Beady Eye.

Barney Hooper from PRS for Music said: “Performing live and going on tour are fundamental to any artist and is a great way for them to engage with their fans. Congratulations to both JLS and Olly Murs and all the songwriters who they have worked with to create the music that so many people are enjoying.”

What’s the most exciting deal/case you’ve worked on and why?

Working on an ITV documentary about Robbie Williams’ return to Take That. Great to listen to the tracks before they were released and watch Robbie for hours on end.

A GARY Barlow super fan who had a Take That-themed wedding has opened a hair and beauty salon inspired by the band.

Denise Pitchford and business partner Karen Morgan have been friends for 30 years – and loyal fans of the five-piece ‘man band’ since the early 90s.

And now the pair have fulfilled a dream by launching Progress Hair and Beauty – named after the Take That’s 2010 album and tour – on Chester Road, Whitby.

“The name is from the last concert, which we both went to see and loved,” said Denise, 35.

Denise’s love of the band – and frontman Barlow in particular – even dominated her wedding to long-term love Jeff last September.

The couple tied the knot at the Best Western Forest Hills Hotel in Gary’s home town of Frodsham – where the frontman used to visit the gym.

“I walked down the aisle to Back for Good, which has always been mine and Jeff’s song from the 18 years ago that we were first together,” said Denise.

“We had Gary’s solo album playing as we signed the register. We walked back down the aisle as man and wife to Rule the World. After the wedding pics had been taken we walked in to our reception room to Greatest Day.

“It was all Take That music, the tables were all named after Take That albums – even my invitations had little Take That symbols on them.”

Progress Hair and Beauty plays the band’s hits all day and boasts a ‘Take That wall’, complete with framed photos of the singers and a gold disc.

“We did try to get Take That wallpaper but failed, so we have made do with posters,” said Denise.

Denise is now hoping Gary will pay a visit to the salon on his next trip to his home town but – in the words of Take That – she may need to have a little Patience.

Progress Hair and Beauty offers a full range of treatments including spray tanning and waxing. For more information, telephone 0151 356 3236.

Continuing the group trend, boy band Take That has sold an estimated 40 million records. The quintet became the musical phenomenon of the 90s. Their 1995 single “Back for Good” is the most successful song ever made by a boy band, topping the charts in 31 countries, including a top-ten berth here. However, the guys split just a year later, before attaining any further US success. They reunited in 2010, but have failed to reach listeners in America.

In that group was Robbie Williams. After being ousted in 1995, Williams launched a massively successful solo career, recording eight studio albums en route to record sales in excess of 70 million, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. Williams’ impact on music in Europe and Central and Latin America has been enormous. Yet many people here have never even heard of him.

Take That have acquired some pretty devoted fans over the years.

Simon Cowell rated Gary Barlow so much that he gave him a job as an X Factor judge.

'You know who else is a Take That fan?' says Robbie Williams, 38, 'Rose West.

'Somebody sent me a link. Rose West is in jail, humming along to Take That songs.'

Serial killer Rosemary West - who in 1995 was convicted of murdering 10 young women - likes to listen to the boy band's hits in her jail cell.

Robbie is 'proud' Take That are being played in HM Prison Low Newton and of all the guys' achievements, though he left the group in 1995, before rejoining in 2010.

It was a big year for him as he also marriedl wife Ayda Field, 32, in August.

'Things have never looked so up,' Robbie tells The Times Magazine.

'There's contentment, and... just recording a new [solo] album.

'And knowing that it's really strong. And I've got a few other things on the horizon.

'Things feel very complete. Things feel very do-able.'

Is history repeating itself for Take That?

We all remember what happened after Take That split up the first time right? Well as that saying goes ‘history has a habit of repeating itself’ – could this be the case with our beloved Take That?

Mark Owen is reportedly set to launch his solo career again, a new record will be his first since 2005′s ‘How the Mighty Fall’ which bore one single ‘Hail Mary’ which didn’t even qualify as an entry on the UK charts sad Recent twitter activity does seem to suggest he is working on some music again, Jay Brown who is a songwriter tweeted Yesterday working wth Mark Owen was AMAZING! on March 15th.

Howard Donald is now DJing again around the UK and Europe, he appeared at Pacha in London this weekend with his girlfriend closely by his side.

Meanwhile Jason Orange was seen ‘finding’ himself whilst driving around Europe after Take That as well as doing a spot of acting here and there, Jason has recently spent 2 months in Thailand at a retreat centre and also has a screen play he has written ready to go.

Robbie Williams is getting ready for his next solo album both physically and mentally.

Gary Barlow is again off doing work for other people, the Jubilee, X Factor oh and also his fourth child are just some of the things on his plate.

So I’m basically worried…will be ever see Take That again?

What do you all think? Will we see the lads after the Jubilee or is their ‘break’ going to turn into longer? Would you support a Mark Owen solo career as a Take That fan?

YOU can tell Take That are producers on their Progress tour DVD – the most controversial moment is when Mark Owen admits to nicking Howard's chocolate eclairs.

At least he didn't steal Gary Barlow's health food salad – then it really would have kicked off. The concert film and the 30-minute documentary are still worth a watch, though.

Gary says: "Initially everyone was a bit worried about Rob. You know – 'Will he make it through? Will he get to the end?' "

And Robbie reveals another superstition. He says: "I watched the others perform every night and there's a big bang and this ticker-tape confetti comes to the back of the stadium. I have to catch one otherwise the show will be s*** that night."

The DVD is bound to be watched by a lot of families on Christmas Day. It's a nailed on stocking filler. I say families – minus blokes in the shed trying out their new power tools.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no Take That hater. I worked at Smash Hits during their golden years. I will fight anyone who doesn't think Never Forget is one of the best pop songs EVER. I've been to Miami with Robbie Williams when he filmed his Freedom video, and New Mexico with Gary Barlow (those are my Diesel jeans!). Take That's Rule The World was even the first dance at my wedding.

But... Gary Barlow, Robbie Williams, Mark Owen, will you please stop getting people pregnant!

I'm not asking for me - personally I'm thrilled for you. In fact, my wife is expecting a baby too. And as long as none of you nick our baby names, I'll continue to be thrilled for you...

I'm not asking for the girls in the Now office. Even if at least two women here audibly sighed when they heard the news about Robbie, as if their chance of nabbing him was finally gone...

I'm asking on behalf of future boybands. What kind of example are you setting?

You're not supposed to be doing all the grown-up stuff and still be a boyband. When you hit 25 you were supposed to pack it in, buy farms and/or islands and live off airplay and royalties.

The clue's in the name. BOY band. Not man band, not dad band - BOY band. Young boys performing for young girls. Take That have become a group of middle-aged, mostly married men, performing for middle-aged, mostly married women.

When a boyband rolls into town, there should be mass swooning (like One Direction), mass looting from Boots' make-up counter as teenage girls try and stand out from the crowd, and mass panic from parents as they sound the 'lock-up-your-daughters' alarm (like the bells that should ring whenever Frankie Cocozza goes within fifty yards of a member of the opposite sex).

But when your Progress (aka Bring-The-Wife) tour rolled into town, there was a rush on mineral water, a shortage of babysitters, and a chance of breaking the Guinness World Record for 'most menopausal women in one arena'.

You didn't race off stage to drink vodka from a naked midget's belly button before taking an entire bus party of groupies back to your suites for a tourgasmic romp. After the encore, you joined your respective wives for chamomile tea and a foot-rub. Non-marrieds Howard and Jason probably just played scrabble or read a book.

Because of Take That's success, we can't move for other ageing ex teen-stars announcing 'unfinished business' and squeezing into age-inappropriate clothes for one more stab at the big time. New(!?) Kids (!?) On The Block, we're looking at you...

So, I'd like to make a plea to all boybands out there. When buying nappies replaces bagging groupies on your to-do list, it's time to call it a day.

P.S. Unless... unless you're breeding Take That Juniors?

With Gary's three (Daniel, Emily, Daisy) Mark's two (Elwood, Willow) Howard's two (Grace, Lola) and three more on the way, TTJ will be up to Blazin' Squad proportions by Christmas. And if Jason ever starts chipping in with Orange babies, they'll be unstoppable...

If we can overlook the inclusion of the Spice Girls at the Brit awards (a great showbusiness moment, but barely live), it’s actually a pretty good line up. But is it the best of British?

The Beatles are probably a fair exclusion, because their great live shows took place off camera before they got hemmed in by hysteria. But no Rolling Stones, a band who completely redefined live rock music? Or Cream for the volatile combination of blues and jazz?

The inclusion of the great artists of the Sixties may be hampered by the limitations of amplification technology and the paucity of good filmed recordings, but the explosion of British rock as a global all conquering force in the seventies still resonates today. It is represented on the disk by Bowie, The Who and Queen but surely Led Zeppelin were the definitive live rock band of the era, and possibly of all time.

Pink Floyd took the live experience to a different plane, first with their mind bending psychedelia and latterly with the stagecraft of The Wall. And then there are the claims of great live bands like Deep Purple, Genesis, Traffic and Free, or the spiritually uplifting drama of Van Morrison in full flight.

As a teenager of the 70s, my formative live experiences took place in the punk explosion, and gigs by The Jam and The Clash still resonate in my memory, exuding a kind of high energy, low maintenance, visceral intensity that, for me, still beats lasers and singalongs every time. Elvis Costello and Ian Dury and all those Stiff eccentrics burned a hole in my heart and brain.

In the 80s, Echo And The Bunnymen and The Smiths took me to special places, for others it was The Specials and New Order. But the Eighties is not well served by the DVD selection, and maybe that is a fair reflection of a period when music divided between synth pop and air blown stadium rock (though a latterday George Michael gets a look in).

I notice, with satisfaction, that the compliers haven’t made the Olympic scale mistake of including Duran Duran. The Britpop boom of the 90s is well represented by Pulp, Blur and Radiohead, yet it was the Stone Roses at Spike Island who effectively inspired a generation, and the singalong experience of massive Oasis concerts that defined it.

Orbital get the techno nod over The Prodigy but that fact that electro is under-represented is no surprise. Those gigs can be euphoric experiences but somehow the organic possibilities of musicians actually playing their instruments live on stage defeats pre-programmed beats every time.

With a nod to the power of pop, Robbie Williams gets two bites of the cherry, solo and with Take That. They are great crowd pleasers but I’d like to drop Primal Scream or Black Sabbath on that adoring audience and see what happened.

The 21st century are represented by a show-stopping TV moment from Adele, and the stadium rock of Muse and Coldplay. I have seen outstanding live gigs from them all. But my own heart has been squeezed tighter by such small things as a breath taking performance in a Soho alley from a 17-year-old Laura Marling.

But then, live is really a personal experience that videos and recordings can’t actually capture, but only remind you of. It's in the word “live” itself: you have to be there.

Music Is Great Britain will be available on May 14th from HMV, Amazon and iTunes. All profits go to Save The Children.

Take That
(Mark Owen, Gary Barlow, Jason Orange, Howard Donald, Robbie Williams).
Take That was a boy band invasion of the 90s. Their first single, “It Only Takes A Minute”, only reached number seven in the UK charts. However, their cover of Barry Manilow's “Could It Be Magic” was their most popular throughout their career. They spilt in 1996. In 2005, the band reunited with a compilation of greatest hits, “Never Forget - The Ultimate Collection”. The documentary “TAKE THAT: For The Record” aired that year also. In 2006 Take That played their Ultimate Tour, minus Robbie Williams. They also released a new album, “Beautiful World”, the fourth best selling album of 2007.
