Take That proved they really are the tops in the big top – and we had the best seats in the house at our very own concert.

When we had an exclusive preview of the show thousands of fans are desperate to see, it only took a minute for us to fall in love.

We partied with the lovely lads until the early hours – a day before the launch of their most spectacular tour to date in Sunderland.

And we knew the £10million Circus tour at the Stadium Of Light was going to be spectacular when we took our seats and saw a huge hot-air balloon centre stage, a giant circus tent, a high wire, trapeze, and clowns handing out balloons.

Then Gary, Mark, Howard and Jason opened the show with recent number one Greatest Day.

Gary said: “We’re all going to have a lot of fun tonight.”

They greeted their screaming fans – us two – with Hello then sunk to their knees and launched into the dance routine for Pray – looking pretty hot in their ringmasters’ black and gold jackets.

They winked at us as they launched into A Million Love Songs. Awwww, bless! We were just wondering if Robbie Williams would reappear when Jason introduced Back For Good – and we were quickly distracted as the daredevils climbed 10ft ladders as a waterfall drenched the stage.

Gary joked: “We hope you enjoyed that. We’ve just risked our lives on a ladder for you.”

Next up came a circus act that had us all gasping.

The boys stepped into a contraption which lifted in the air to reveal a giant mechanical elephant, with a dancer strapped upside down on the back as the animal’s tail.

The beast then walked them to the main stage as they sang The Garden. They arrived on stage with a massive fanfare for Shine as a huge roll of drummers, 30 dancers in feather showgirl costumes, girls on trapeze, acrobats on trampolines, jugglers – you name it they had it. After that spectacular, the dancers dispersed and Gary handed over to the boys as they performed Up All Night by Mark and Jason’s tracks Wooden Boat and the brilliant How Did It Come To This?

Gary performed a solo of The Circus on the piano as one performer perched on the highwire.

The boys came back on dressed as mime artists with suitcases in front of them to apply their own clown make-up for What Is Love?

Howard said: “It’s hard to sing and put on lipstick at the same time.”

He then started pelvic thrusts and they burst into a hilarious dance routine to a medley of old tracks Do What You Like, Promises, It Only Takes A Minute and Take That And Party. Then they showed off a real circus trick – riding unicycles.

Well, all except Gary – who had everyone in stitches by riding a mini-bike with stabilisers.

When they dropped their pants to reveal boxer shorts with the TT logo on the bums we went absolutely crazy. Both of us!

Amazingly we soon forgot about their cute buns as they belted out Said It All, Never Forget and Patience. And just when we thought we had seen it all a giant ringmaster puppet popped up on the stage to introduce one of our old favourites: Relight My Fire.

The lads burst on stage: whips in hand, with Mark wearing a Freddie Mercury-inspired gold jumpsuit the rest in black ringmaster suits, as blazing pyrotechnics shot into the sky to warm up the crowd, a woman hula-hooping with flames and pole-dancing catwomen.

We were exhausted by the time they took a bow after almost two hours of non-stop partying.

They closed the show with the fantastic Rule The World. They certainly rule ours…

THIS WAS there the night the £10million Take That Circus came to town – and the fab four make every other reunited manband look like clowns. Their spectacular set includes a mechanical elephant, acrobatics, scantily-clad dancers and costumes to make Lady GaGa weep with jealousy.

was invited to a private rehearsal ahead of Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Howard Donald opening at Sunderland’s Stadium Of Light last night.

And I was utterly blown away by what is truly the best pop show I’ve ever seen (and I’ve been to all the biggies).

Gary, who has been battling a trapped nerve in his back, told me: “The show cost £10million, the most we’ve ever spent, but it was worth it. “We started planning it nine months ago and rehearsing three months ago.”

The gig opened with No 1 hit Greatest Day. Dancers painted with the same sky featured on the sleeve for the Circus album surrounded the band with balloons. One guy even went up in a hot-air balloon.

But the highlight is the most incredible prop ever – the mechanical elephant, which emerged from the ground during The Garden. With flapping ears, flashing eyes and a trunk spraying water, it’s a mindblowing sight.

With Gary on keyboard, Mark on bass, Howard on drums and Jason on guitar for Up All Night, a slight wardrobe malfunction rocked the crowd. Jason, 38, confessed: “I’m loving these trousers as they’re Sunderland football colours but they’re crushing my balls. I feel like I should be in The Darkness.”

Roars of approval came when Gary, 38, asked if anyone wanted to take the offending garment off Jay, whose solo numbers Wooden Boat and How Did It Come To This made it worth him soldiering through the cramp.

A tightrope walker balanced between the two stages as Gary played The Circus himself.

And Howard, 41, got his solo moment on What Is Love, where the band painted their faces. Then, as clowns, they threw the original moves for Do What U Like, Promises, It Only

Takes A Minute and Take That And Party. The latter saw Mark, Jason and Howard hop on
unicycles while Gary rode a tricycle.

Original Relight My Fire vocalist Loleatta Hollway joined a giant inflatable ringmaster and saucy dancers in cages for the disco classic.

Turning into a human candle for Hold Up The Light, Mark Owen, 37, shone in a silver suit before fireworks lit up the sky as finale Rule The World played.

After catching Jason Orange in his pants about to dive into his ice bath, I joined the band for a post-show drink. Howard revealed it took three days to master the unicycles, admitting: “We still have moments when it’s wobbly so you have to clown around and act like it’s part of the show.”

Mark added: “We’re thrilled it went so well.”

And hats off to James Morrison, 24, and Gary Go, 25, who had the daunting task of opening for Take That.

Having the final traces of his clown face wiped off, Jason grinned: “It’s the best show we’ve ever done.”

Nah – best pop show ANYONE has ever done, mate.

ROLL UP FOR TAKE THAT CIRCUS SPECTACULAR

Take That are no clowns when it comes to putting on a show.

Proving that they really are the tops in the big top, they wowed thousands of fans as they kicked off their most spectacular tour to date in Sunderland.

We were lucky enough to have a sneak preview of the show the night before - but last night the £10million extravaganza was even better as Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Howard Donald took to the stage at Stadium of Light.

Jason yelled: "Hello Sunderland! Are you ready to party? You are so loud."

Which drove the audience - packed mainly with screaming women (us included) - even more wild.

The set was adorned with a giant circus tent, and huge hot-air balloon in the centre of the stadium from which they emerged singing Greatest Day as hundreds of balloons were released into the sky.

Mark said: "We're going to take you back to 1991 now, with Could It Be Magic." And it only took a minute, girls, for everyone to fall in love again.

We were especially chuffed because we'd partied with the lads until the early hours just the day before.

And we knew the £10million Circus tour was going to be spectacular when we took our seats for their practice run.

When they sank to their knees for the dance routine to Pray, looking hot in their ringmasters' black and gold jackets, we knew we were in for a treat.

They even winked at us as they launched into A Million Love Songs. Awwww, bless!

We knew Jason, Howard and Mark can sing and dance a bit - but who knew the lads could ride unicyles too? The stage was all wet after the rain, and Mark took a bit of a tumble. Gary had a trike because of a bad back he got climbing Kilimanjaro.

Still, impressive stuff!

Gary, Howard, Jason and Mark will play to more than one million people along the way – making this the biggest tour the band have ever undertaken.

As well as the opening night, Take That will perform a second show at the Stadium of Light the following evening and Jason Orange told the Chronicle he is thrilled.

“Everybody says in these interviews ‘wouldn’t you have rather started at Wembley or Manchester?’ he said.
“We’re not bothered about that. We’ve always had fantastic support and the further north you go in our country, the more electric the audience is.
“I don’t need to say this, but the North East fans have always been electric and some of our best supporters.

“We can’t wait to get there.”

Jason is no stranger to the region. His mum ran the Rosie Malone pub in South Shields for about five years.

“I was up there a few times. I loved it,” he said.

It is Take That’s first full-scale stadium tour, having played Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena four times since reforming in 2005.

Jason admitted all four members of the band are not taking their success for granted second-time round.
“It’s just life I suppose. Every time you think you’ve got a hold on life and how it works it always surprises you,” he reflected.

“In this instance it surprised us in the most wonderful way possible.

“On one of the last nights on our previous tour, the promoter said if we did another one it might be a good idea to do stadiums.

“It is easier for us as you work less and get to see more people.

“It is a change from arenas. We did maybe 50 arena dates last time.

“To do stadiums this time is a different environment and a different challenge.”

One of those challenges, he admitted, was topping their previous shows.
With 59 trucks heading to the Stadium of Light, that shouldn’t be a problem.
“In a stadium area we can have a bigger facility and a bigger production,” he explained.
“It is always a challenge improving on the last time.

“We’ve never been afraid to spend the money and I suppose the trick this time is doing the research and choosing the right people to be able to put us together a huge stadium show, but without it turning into something ridiculous.”
“All of us are really looking forward to getting back on the road again.
“We can think of no better way to thank everyone for their support and loyalty over the past few years.
“This will be the biggest tour we’ve ever done and we’ve been working especially hard over the last few months to make it the best and most exciting Take That tour yet.”
