| He cooked, he cleaned and he looked after Rob a fair bit. Rob would go to Dublin or somewhere and get off his head. Then he would come home and say, “I haven’t slept for two days.” He didn’t want to go home and face his mum so he’d come to me first. Maurice would cook him a big meal and knock him into shape and then he’d go home.

GARY ON HIS FEET: “The Cats I’ve got are actually two sizes too big. You see, I’ve got quite wide feet, so I have to buy a bigger size sometimes to accommodate them.”
GARY ON HIS NAME: “I don’t know where this rumour started that my middle name was William because it isn’t! But even the people at the fan club thought it was William. It’s not. Just plain Gary Barlow. Not much of a pop star name, is it? Gary Barlow?”
GARY ON TRAVELLING: “Do you know what? We’ve been to so many countries and I remember them all by the food. I could tell you a restaurant in each place!”
GARY ON HIS BEST MATES: “It’s frightening how close we’ve all become. The lads in the band are my best friends. If we weren’t, it wouldn’t work. But we’re at the stage now where we should all be rowing and falling out with each other and we’re not. We’re even closer than before. It’s spooky.”

Gary: He's got a little trick, Mark has. It's great. He says, 'if you ever want anything ironing, Gaz, and you haven't got an iron, hang it up in the shower and let the steam get to it, and that always irons it out!'

Gary Barlow talks to TV Times magazine about his mission for Queen and country in Gary Barlow: On Her Majesty's Service (Sunday, BBC1)...
You seemed to have an amazing time visiting the different Commonwealth countries. Did you bring home any keepsakes?
“No, I’m using photos and the video footage as my souvenirs. I was given a couple of bracelets off the Masai tribe in Africa, which I gave to the kids.”
Was there more pressure on you writing this song given that it’s for The Queen?
“There’s a lot of pressure on us, I think, because we’re basically competing against Elgar. I mean Land of Hope and Glory is pretty much it, isn’t it? It’s the best song that’s ever been linked to Royalty. I don’t know if you can compete with him, but we’ve tried!”
You’re key to the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. How did you celebrate the Queen’s Silver and Golden Jubilees?
“I was six at the time of the 1977 Silver Jubilee, and we had a big do in our back garden. For the Golden Jubilee in 2002 I was living in LA at the time. I didn’t feel part of it really at all because I was so far away, but I saw a bit of the concert on TV.”
In the past, we Brits have been cynical about getting into the party spirit for royal celebrations. What do you think has given the Royals the ‘X Factor’ again?
“I think the younger Royals keep it current. The wedding last year was super, the whole country felt amazing around at that time and we certainly all tuned in to watch, as did the world. I think we forget that this is a family that are held in high respect around the world, there’s a global interest in them.”
How important do you feel the Queen is to our country?
“Vital, especially at this point. I’ve seen Royal diaries – I know what they look like because I’ve linked up with a couple of Princes on this film. It’s two-three visits a day – they’re going into rooms shaking peoples’ hands and travelling constantly, I couldn’t do it. They do it relentlessly and there comes a point when you’ve got to just go, ‘Respect’.”
And finally, you’re going to be a very busy man this month, what with the concert and auditions for X Factor in full swing. Do you ever find time to sleep!?
“Sleep’s not important. It’s overrated, and it’s overused. You can sleep when you’re dead!”

| "On tour everyone splits off into little groups and I made sure I got in with Dawn's circle. But God, was it slow going! Dawn is quiet and much more reserved than me, she had only ever had one boyfriend.
I was dropping hints like bricks. 'So,you know,should we er... should we do something, er, together... sometime...?' and getting nowhere. We were about halfway through the tour when Mark said to me, 'How's it going, then?'
'I'll be honest,' I said, 'if i don't get a kiss or something tonight, I'm moving on. I don't mind a bit of hard work, but this is ridiculous!'
We headed out to a club that night, but as we were surrounded by crew, bodyguards and the whole entourage, it wasn't exactly private. But Dawn and I danced face to face all night. At one point Mark came over and said, 'This is it, mate!' When we left the club and got in the van, we were all squeezed in - there must have been sixteen of us going back to the hotel and it was quite a small van - and I said to Dawn, 'Sit on my knee.' As she sat down she turned round. That was our first kiss and it lasted all the way back to the hotel. I was staying at home, so I left her there that night, but pretty soon after that we became inseparable."

What a start to 96! On the whole though I think it’s going to be a good year. I’ve been on the road with the boys for the past two weeks and I’m sure you’re all going to love the solo plans we all got. Thank you for being the best fans in the world. I’m sure it won’t be long before I see you again.
