| Gary Barlow’s Diamond Jubilee track with the Commonwealth Band is poised to achieve the highest weekly sales for a single in the UK this year after taking just four days to reach six figures.
The Decca-issued Sing, penned by Barlow and Andrew Lloyd Webber, had reached 108,000 weekly sales by the end of business on Wednesday and rose to 122,000 the following day, according to the Official Charts Company. This puts it clearly on course to beat 2011’s biggest weekly total for a single so far, 127,998 achieved by Ministry of Sound release Hot Right Now by DJ Fresh featuring Rita Ora in February.
The high sales for Sing, which was a new entry at 11 on last Sunday’s chart, had by yesterday put it more than 75,000 units ahead of nearest challenger, Atlantic act Flo Rida’s newly-issued track Whistle. Atlantic/Fueled By Ramen’s Were Are Young by Fun featuring Janelle Monae is down 2-3 in the week to date, while RCA’s Usher is new at four with Scream as last Sunday’s number one, the Asylum/Black Butter-issued Feel The Love by Rudimental featuring John Newman, drops to five. Just behind it as a new entry in sixth position is Ministry of Sound track The Power by DJ Fresh featuring Dizzee Rascal.
The Gary Barlow and Commonwealth Band album, also called Sing, will spend a second week at the top of the artist albums countdown this Sunday having already achieved the highest sales for a number one in 13 weeks and with two days of trading still to go. Up until the end of Thursday it had sold 59,696 copies this week, the most for a number one since Columbia act Bruce Springsteen’s Wrecking Ball clocked up 74,401 during its entire first week in March to debut at number one.
Sales of Asylum/Atlantic act Ed Sheeran’s + have almost tripled following his performance at the Diamond Jubilee concert in front of Buckingham Palace on Monday, lifting it 13-2 on midweeks. RCA’s Paloma Faith album Fall To Grace drops 2-3 as the Reprise/Rhino Bee Gees best of Number Ones climbs 7-4 and Parlophone act Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto rises 11-5 following the start of the band’s UK tour. Among a host of other acts benefitting from the Jubilee concert, Jessie J is enjoying a 117% lift in sales of her Island/Lava debut Who You Are to move it 20-6 on midweeks.

| Gary Barlow rounds off a momentous career week today as he rockets his way from Buckingham Palace straight to an Official Chart double victory topping both the Official Singles Chart and the Official Albums Chart!
Sing, the official Diamond Jubilee song co-written by Gary Barlow and Andrew Lloyd Webber, has racked up a massive 142,000 sales since last weekend’s Jubilee concert, to become the biggest selling Number 1 of the year so far. The closest any other track has got to this tally in 2012 is DJ Fresh FT Rita Ora whose chart-topping single Hot Right Now shifted 128,000 copies in its first week on sale back in February.
Sing also outsells the rest of this week’s Top 3 singles combined– Flo Rida’s Whistle (Number 2) and Fun FT Janelle Monae’s We Are Young (3).
Gary Barlow is pictured presented with his Official Number 1 Award – the new award created by the Official Charts Company to celebrate 60 Years of the Official Singles Chart in 2012. The brushed aluminium trophy is now presented in partnership with BBC Radio 1 to each new single that reaches the coveted Number 1 spot on the UK’s Official Chart.
“It’s been such a great week, it would take something very special to top it,” Gary told the Official Charts. “I’d like to say thanks on behalf of about 200 people as we’ve got a massive cast on this record. I love collaborating with other artists and being able to put them all on one stage the other night was such an honour for me. It’s something I’ll never forget.”
Meanwhile the album from which the title track is taken comfortably outstrips the rest of the Top 5 albums combined. Sing by Gary Barlow & The Commonwealth Band scoops the top slot on the Official Albums Chart too, making it the first Official Chart Double of the year so far, and the second of Gary Barlow’s career, his first chart double was Take That’s 2006 hallowed pop comeback with Patience and accompanying studio album Beautiful World.
Sing co-writer Andrew Lloyd Webber said: “The last time I had a Number 1 album and Number 1 single at the same time was for Evita in 1976 when both the album and Don’t Cry For Me Argentina were at the top of the charts. So this is fantastic news about Sing! Roll on the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee!!”

| A closely fought albums battle this week sees Gary Barlow & The Commonwealth Band claiming a Number 1 victory for the third week running with the Official Diamond Jubilee album, Sing.
The Take That star, who has become an OBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list this week, saw off new competition this week from Scottish singer/songwriter Amy MacDonald and her new album Life In A Beatiful Light (2), and Usher’s Looking 4 Myself (3), featuring Top 5 singles Climax and Scream. Only a little over 1000 copies separated all three artists.
Today’s Official Albums Chart Top 5 is completed by Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto (4) and Paloma Faith’s Fall To Grace (5).

| Cast your minds back to that lovely long weekend most of us managed to bag for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and you might remember Cheryl Cole joining Gary Barlow on stage for a little duet at the Jubilee concert.
You may also remember that some people loved that duet… and some people, well, were a little bit sceptical on some of the vocals. But last weekend we discussed the finer details with a bunch of people whose opinions really mattered – and they were Platinum-selling US country-pop band Lady Antebellum, who originally sang the song Need You Now.
Far from getting all possessive over their biggest hit (if you ever listen to Magic FM, you’ll know exactly the tune we mean), Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood got rather excited about the whole thing – and said that they were actually beside themselves when the realised that their song was going to be performed in front of the Queen.
The only thing was, no one thought to tell them beforehand, so they only found after Chez and Gaz Baz had taken to the stage on the big day… which means, they couldn’t watch it live.
Hillary told us at London’s Hard Rock Calling festival, “We couldn't believe [Gary Barlow and Cheryl Cole] covered us at the biggest event in the UK.
“As soon as we heard about it, we went on YouTube and watched it.”
Charles continued, "My wife is a huge Royalist so it meant so much to her. The Queen got to hear our song, that’s pretty cool. Plus Cheryl is hot so we were pretty happy with that.”
Side note: Is there anyone out there who doesn’t fancy Cheryl? Apparently not – even bands from Nashvillle, Tennessee fancy her.
So it looks like the big duet went down very well and frankly, that is very good news. Well done Chezza and Gaz Baz.
