| Долго выбирала между Фил и Сомфинг бьютифул. Выбрала вторую, она в плане музыки все-таки посильнее имхо =))

| Today when I opened my mailbox I was greeted by a “Tibetan wisdom” spam mail encouraging me to write down four names of people, three songs, one number, two types of food and to draw a canary. According to the author, the message was magical and would reveal my true self. And so the third noted person was supposed to be my secret crush while the second song that came to my mind was the one that best characterized me.
It would not be wise to put too much fate info a random list of things jotted down over a silly email. Then again this exercise got me wandering through all my different musical preferences reminding me of some tracks that were once favourite and now long forgotten.
And following that lead, if I were to name three of my most favourite English songs ever what would they be? A dilemma not easily resolved.
Generally, the thing with music is that it moves people. It brings back memories or makes us act a little bit strange every once in a while. Most of us have some disco fascinations, let’s say at a house party after a few drinks. Table dancing anyone? Well thankfully enough the same song does not have the same effect when one is sober.
But let's not focus on the circumstances in which we hear certain tunes and put the main interest on the music itself.
Personally I usually value songs for one of three reasons: good lyrics, a good bit or brilliance in both. I grew up listening to Queen, Genesis and Californian punk rock. And among these artists I would place my most memorable or simply favourite pieces of music of all time. But when it comes to the level of lyrics, the song I need to mention is Feel by Robbie Williams. When looking at a song as on a poem, then this particular track seems to describe me in almost every line. And it seems I'm not alone in that opinion. The international charts say it all. “The song became an international hit, reaching the top of the charts in Austria, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, and top five positions in countries such as Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom.”
But why was is so popular? The melody is really not that catchy, and black and white Robbie Williams in a cowboy theme kissing Daryl Hannah, however handsome, can't be solely responsible for the success of the track. Maybe songs with “love” in the chorus simply sell better.
So in this case the devil might be in the lyrics.
In Feel Robbie sings from a position of a person who's a bit confused about his life, or life in general terms to be more exact.
I sit and talk to God
And he just laughs at my plans
My head speaks a language
I don't understand.
All of us at some point have experienced that peculiar feeling. In a flash of a strange sanity the thought that there is just something wrong with this world.
My favourite verse of the song is:
I don't want to die
But I ain't keen on living either.
What a better way to sum up a person who really can't make up his mind about what he wants in life. Surely he doesn’t want to end it and it’s not his time to say farewell. But still the current existence is not as enjoyable as one might expect. And the author (Robbie) suspects why:
Before I fall in love
I'm preparing to leave her.
Here Robbie is aware that he consciously avoids the one thing he really wants. That's probably why he says:
I scare myself to death
That's why I keep on running.
Not a very positive outlook on life in its everyday experience. For some reason things don't really go the way the author would like them to, and the love he longs for is just not there. But as a smart guy he has a clue why:
Before I've arrived
I can see myself coming.
A very good characteristic of a person who can't really focus on the present moment and is always somewhere ahead. Because his thoughts are constantly running into the undefined future he really can't appreciate or embrace anything he has right now. A person stuck in between what was and what will be seems condemned to feeling a constant anxiety.
What is interesting, the author of the lyrics is quite aware of his flaws. Yet he doesn’t really see them as the things that hinder his actions. A very common trait nowadays. “I am what I am” as you might say.
In the chorus we can see that Robbie believes he generally is a good guy:
I got too much life
Running through my veins
And has so much to offer. The only thing missing from his life is love. The love that is the cure, the ultimate goal and the solution to all trouble that we experience in life.
The whole song is a bit like an attempt at self-psychoanalysis. Robbie recognises the sources of the fear he is experiencing as his own traits.
There's a hole in my soul
You can see it in my face
It's a real big place.
He knows what is wrong but alone he can't do much to fight his demons, to fight himself.
But in contrast the answer to the complexity, the gloominess and the anticipation of human life is quite simple: Love.
And I need to feel real love
And a life ever after
I cannot give it up.
According to Williams himself, the whole song is the confession of a person “who's not really sure of his place in the world and what's going on.” while all he ever wants is love.
So in the end the tone of the song is quite optimistic: “All you need is Love”. Now where did we hear that...A sentence very true yet sometimes very hard to achieve. Then again achievable, theoretically at least.
The whole song in connection to the vivid and somewhat troubled personally of Robbie Williams seems to be very authentic. He is not only the author of the lyrics, he can be their subject as well, with many of us also along the way. Fear, loneliness and love are the feelings that everyone has experienced at some point of our lives. And running away from the one thing we long for is not so unusual either. Perhaps in this universality of emotions lies the strength of Feel. The song is a successful summary of the contemporary ills of a lonely man that reaches beyond a simple pop song. After all, if we admit it or not, we all need to feel real love...
