TAKE THAT are a clean-cut manband from Manchester. Amy Winehouse is a drug-addled caner from Camden.

But, despite the gaping crack between them, How Did It Come To This, on Take That’s forthcoming album The Circus, is inspired by troubled Amy’s life.

JASON ORANGE — who was once the band’s chief hellraiser before hanging up his party hat — was behind the track about “a girl in Camden Town” living her life under the spotlight.

The lady in question is described as “slightly schizophrenic” and “slightly OCD” and living “a world away.”

Remind you of anyone?

Jason sings: “All this noise and all these lights/All this talking through the night. All this expectation now it’s making me neurotic/ Tell me have I seen your face before? How did it come to this?/ How did it ever come to this?”

The track later pleads with the caned Camden character: “Have you turned on your TV?/ Have you seen reality?”

Winehouse is probably the most unpleasant person to feature in a song from these pop kings. But fans looking forward to the new Take That CD brightening up winter should not fear.

The Circus — out December 1 — is the most uplifting, orchestral epic material they have produced.

The band shared responsibility and vocals around more than ever, with MARK OWEN in particular taking more lead duties.

And Mark revealed: “There was a real camaraderie and equal flow of ideas.”

He takes the lead on track Hello — where the credit crunch gets a mention. Mark sings: “Looks like the cost of houses are falling but I don’t notice.”

And he revealed: “It’s a fun optimistic song that definitely shows a different side to us.”

HOWARD DONALD sings lead on What Is Love and Here — co-written with London indie folk duo TURIN BRAKES.

Meanwhile band chief GARY BARLOW is pleased the album’s first single — Greatest Day, out Monday — makes choosing the setlist for their gigs easier.

He said: “We’ve got so many songs to choose from to close live shows, but we always struggled for one to open with.

“Greatest Day is that song.”

The lads last month broke the record for the fastest-selling UK tour — selling 600,000 tickets in five hours for their 2009 stadium dates. They’ve had a lot of Greatest Days lately.

Unlike Winehouse...

11:35 | Wednesday November 19, 2008

By Paul Williams

Take That are to perform a mini set on Radio Two at the beginning of next month as part of the promotion for their new studio album.

The Polydor signings are expected to perform around six songs live from the BBC Radio Theatre in London during Ken Bruce’s morning programme, including their forthcoming single Greatest Day, which is currently on the station’s A list. It will take place on Monday, December 1, the same day as their album The Circus is released.

Meanwhile, the BBC station is hosting an exclusive live performance of Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett’s Monkey: Journey To The West. The performance, which will feature Chinese and European musicians from the original theatre production, will be held this coming Tuesday at the Radio Theatre and will be broadcast on Saturday, November 29 from 7 to 8pm.

Since their mega successful comeback reminded us that we will always be a nation full of Take That fans - the boys could have released a recording of Mark Owen brushing his teeth and it would probably sell bucketloads.
However, for their eagerly awaited new single, Greatest Day, they have done what they do best - ie, a soaring inoffensive ballad with sad piano-led reflective bits eventually drowned out by a triumphantly rousing chorus.
It may shamelessly latch onto the boyband blueprint they basically perfected, but it will no doubt be filling stockings in households across the country come Xmas.

Take That

Take That.

Робби Уильямс и Гэри Барлоу выступят в рождественской программе «An Audience With...», посвященной группе Take That. Take That.

24 ноября группа Take That планирует выпустить первый сингл «The Greatest Day» из нового альбома «Circus», релиз которого намечен на 1 декабря.

Gary Barlow slams Britney Spears

Take That frontman Gary Barlow has taken a pop at Britney Spears, saying she is more famous than she deserves to be.

And the pop legend reckons Britney's performance on The X Factor was not up to scratch, branding it "rubbish".

Gary told The Mirror: "I don't see the point of Britney anymore, she was rubbish on the show. I think she's more famous than she deserves to be now."

"Why come on a show like that and mime? I don't like her new song either. Her old stuff was great but maybe she should have spent more time on this one."

Take That's album went head-to-head with Britney's this week, and both are named Circus.

The pop band broke the record for first-day sales and are at number 1 in the midweek charts, while Britney is at no 3.

TTalent quest ... Gary Barlow

I revealed last month that he has started his own management and publishing company to nurture future chart stars.

And when the lads took me to France this week for the launch of their latest album The Circus, Gaz discussed his secret passion for talent-hunting for the first time.

He told me: “I am at a lot of gigs, me. I go to The Dublin Castle, Boogaloo, The Bedford.

“I don’t wear a disguise but I’m up the back keeping it low-key. It’s mostly in London. Now and again I am in Manchester. I work with our tour promoter on a lot of the scouting.

“We do three things — publishing, management and we sign acts to Universal. I love all that stuff. It is my future.

“I don’t want to be SIMON COWELL but I will do what he has done but my way. He goes for people he thinks he can make into something, I try to find people who are already something.”

A great example of that is Wembley rock singer/songwriter Gary Co, who he has signed, says Gary.

“He has produced and written everything himself. I love that. It makes me better. I sit and work with them and see what it is they are doing.”

But Gary — who last month gave X Factor finalists a masterclass with bandmate MARK OWEN — can’t see a future for himself as a smug talent-show judge spouting off about endless woeful renditions of the band’s 1995 chart-topper Back For Good.

He said: “I can’t see myself being an X Factor judge. Being down there the other week was weird.

“You walk out there and Cowell’s just looking at you. It puts you on edge straight away. How those kids must feel every week. It’s nerve-wracking. I’d be bloody nervous.
var RStag = ""; try{ RStag = segQS; } catch(e){ RStag = ""; } document.write(''); Dim adsVB,po adsVB=0 If ScriptEngineMajorVersion >=2 then adsVB=1 Function adsAX(aX) on error resume next If adsVB=1 then adsAX=False set po=CreateObject(aX) adsAX=IsObject(po) If (err) then adsAX=False Else adsAX=False End If End Function

“The truth is, I wouldn’t have got through if I had tried. It’s terrible.”

But he did have some thoughts on BRITNEY SPEARS’ X Factor disaster on Saturday night — in which the pop princess mimed her single Womanizer on the live talent contest.

“I was not impressed,” he said. “But I don’t know what everyone was expecting.

“I have seen her on TV before doing exactly that. Why did we expect her to do anything different? It’s gone.”

If any band is qualified to pass comment, Take That are up there.

Gary, Mark, HOWARD DONALD and JASON ORANGE have just enjoyed the most incredible sales of their career.

The Circus has shifted a whopping 134,000 copies after ONE DAY on shop shelves and will easily eclipse the 200,000 first-week sales managed by Sunday’s No1, Day & Age by THE KILLERS.

Take That have a great chance of beating COLDPLAY to the title of fastest-selling album of the year – Viva La Vida sold 302,000 in its first week.

And the boys were in the mood to celebrate on Monday night. They knocked back vodkas and danced with fans after a showcase in Paris.

They played some new tunes from the album, including Greatest Day and Julie, which will be a surefire hit with Mark on lead vocals.

The best thing about the lads is that they still seem stunned about their success second time round.

After their sell-out tour next summer, they will have cemented their place in British music history as one of the best bands this country has ever produced.

Once that is done, Gary should have more time to find the next band capable of beating their incredible pop CV.

There's some really quite insightful comments in this one. In The Sun. What is the world coming to?!

Take That 'massively outselling' Britney

Rex Features
Take That are outselling Britney Spears in the album charts by a significant margin.

The group's new album The Circus sold 132,985 units on its first day of release, outselling nearest rival The Killers's LP Day And Age more than four times.

Britney Spears's latest release Circus is on course to land in the top three, having sold 24,288 copies on Monday.

Take That's first day sales figures are the biggest of the year, trumping the 125,000 Coldplay's Viva La Vida sold in 24 hours in June.

The Manchester four-piece broke records last week when their new album became the most popular of all time on digital music store Play.

MUMS are ditching lullabies — and instead singing pop songs to tots.

Take That’s Patience is the top tune to get babies to sleep, according to a survey.

The poll of 2,000 mums put Robbie Williams’ Angels second and the upbeat I Kissed A Girl by Katy Perry third.

One in ten mums said they could not remember lullaby lyrics.

Kathryn Crahttp.ecewford from thebabywebsite.com said: “We were really surprised.”

Take That! Why Gary Barlow’s the handsome one now

Dec 5 2008 by Lowri Turner, Western Mail

For Take That to be top of the charts is pretty astounding, but not half as amazing as the fact that, brace yourself, Gary Barlow is now fanciable.

While all the other members of the band have got a bit old and gristly, albeit in a ruggedly handsome way, Gary has suddenly emerged as the glowing pin-up of the group.

Gary was always the fat, but talented, one.

He’s still talented, but now he looks about 10 years younger than the rest of them.

Does this mean that a youth spent as a porker somehow preserves your appearance for a late spurt of fanciability in later life? It should give hope to every teenage fat friend who currently feels invisible. Your time will come!

Naughty Howard Donald let us in on a little secret about the band's method of recruiting backing dancers. He told us: "They have to have a nice bum, and be able to dance, of course. If they have got a nice bum but a dodgy face, then we put a mask on them. It's all about the bum." Very new man, Howard.

1 - The Willows – Gary gets third

Shortly before Gary Barlow auditioned for Take That, he took part in The Willows’ annual Search For A Star competition. Despite including the future hit A Million Love Songs in his show, he finished third, being marked down on stage presentation and star potential.

2 - Strawberry Studios – Two out of five

Gary won recording time at 10CC’s Strawberry Studios in Stockport, where he met up with the studio tea-boy, a certain Mark Owen. Together they formed a band called The Cutest Rush, singing cover versions and Gary's own songs.

3 - Royal Exchange – Coming together

The five members of Take That auditioned for the band at try-outs held by Nigel Martin-Smith across Manchester. Once Nigel had decided on the line-up, they came together at his offices in the Royal Exchange to sign their contracts.

4 – South Manchester Studios – Film what you like

As Gary Barlow once put it, never forget where you come from, but you can be sure that the lads do their best to avoid thinking about their first video, made in Heaton Mersey for Do What You Like, which featured the five lads cavorting in leather, covering themselves with jelly and flashing their bums – all a long way from the LA rooftop that provided the backdrop for the Greatest Day promo.

5 - Manchester Apollo – first major homecoming

On Monday 9 November 1992, the Take That & Party Tour came to town, bringing the increasingly successful band back to the city for the first time since they’d cracked the top ten with both Only Takes A Minute and A Million Love Songs

6 – Manchester Airport – the break-up

On Tuesday 13 February 1996, with the papers full of rumours about Take That’s future after Robbie’s departure the previous July, the band held a press conference at the Hilton Manchester Airport Hotel to say How Deep Is Your Love would be their last single, after which the band would split up.

Listen to the newsbeat report of the Take That split - http://www.bbc.co.uk/manchester/ram/take_that_split.ram

7 - MEN Arena – the Ultimate experience

Following a TV documentary, Gary, Mark, Howard and Jason decide to reform Take That and go back on tour. The response to the news is phenomenal, with the venues selling out in minutes. On Thursday 4 May 2006, after eight Ultimate Tour shows elsewhere, Take That made an emotional homecoming at the Arena, the first of six dates – two months later, they followed it with shows at the City Of Manchester Stadium.

8 - Mancunian Way – an ode to the city

Just to prove their love of Manchester, the lads included an ode to the city and how they felt about it, Mancunian Way, on their comeback album, Beautiful World. As if to prove their local knowledge, it includes the lines “we used to think we were the bomb/Then someone left a real one”

See a gallery of Take That's Beautiful World show http://www.bbc.co.uk/manchester/cont..._gallery.shtml

9 - Old Trafford cricket ground – The Circus comes to town

If any proof were needed that the band are back for good, it’s the 300,000 tickets they sold in less than an hour for their 2009 summer stadium tour of the UK, which comes to Old Trafford for five dates at the end of June.

It’s not the band’s only link to the area though. Way back before Take That were even an idea, Mark Owen had trials with Manchester United and while the band were on hiatus, Jason Orange studied psychology and sociology at the nearby South Trafford College.

Take That
December 05, 2008 01:33 PM ET
Mark Sutherland, London
Former boy band Take That is delivering some very grown-up sales figures. The act-a U.K. sales phenomenon since original members Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Howard Donald re-formed in 2005-posted the biggest first-day U.K. album sale of the year Dec. 1.

Its Polydor album "The Circus" sold 133,000 copies, according to the Official Charts Co. (OCC), beating Coldplay's "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends" (Parlophone) by 8,000 copies. That sale was delivered despite the album being unavailable at many key U.K. retailers after wholesaler EUK went into administration, which is similar to U.S. Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

"The business is in transition," says Universal Music Group International executive VP Max Hole, also president of Universal Music Asia Pacific. "But if you've got great music and great artists, you can still do quite remarkable numbers."

The numbers are the latest landmark achievement for the band, which smashed U.K. box-office records in October when 600,000 tickets for its 2009 stadium tour sold out in less than five hours. The group subsequently added more dates and has now sold a total of 700,000 tickets for its 14 stadium shows, kicking off June 5 at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland. The first single from the album, "Greatest Day," debuted at No. 1 on the OCC's Nov. 30 chart with sales of 70,300. It's the group's 11th No. 1, a tally topped only by the Beatles (17) and Irish boy band Westlife (14).

Universal Music U.K. chairman/CEO David Joseph signed the re-formed act after working with its original incarnation at RCA (featuring Robbie Williams) before the group split in 1996. He attributes Take That's success to its desire not to just rehash its old sound.
CM8ShowAd("Middle");

On its previous album "Beautiful World," "the whole approach was to make them sound like they would if the band had been making records for the previous 10 years," he says. "Now they can afford to take a creative risk knowing that they look and sound like a supergroup."

"Beautiful World" went on to outsell all of the band's previous albums in the United Kingdom, providing 2.5 million of a career sales total of 6.1 million units. However, Hole notes its "reasonably modest" performance in the rest of the world. The album hit No. 1 in Ireland and the United Kingdom, and went top 10 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.

"The Circus" was released worldwide Dec. 1, except in France where it hits stores in February and the United States. Only the original lineup's swan song album, "Nobody Else" (Arista), received an official U.S. release, with sales of 287,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"We have a lot of interest in the music from our American partners," says Joseph, who adds that a decision on a U.S. release will be made "in the next few months."

December 6, 2008 Take That: The Circus Victoria Segal If the Spice Girls reunion was a textbook example of how not to conduct a comeback – woeful single, underwear-heavy video, turbulent tour – then Take That’s return is the gold standard: a hugely successful second coming from a band determined not to fritter away their reserves of goodwill. Walking out of the shadow of the valley of Robbie Williams with Beautiful World, they cast off the spangled clothes of the defunct boy band and replaced them with immaculate Marks and Spencer suits, repositioning themselves as showbiz veterans who have matured alongside their fans. The thrusting hips and ludicrously studded codpieces are now a distant (if fond) memory; instead,

Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Howard Donald and Jason Orange have found a trooper-like dignity few would have expected. Once again a group collaboration, their fifth album is a nononsense blend of big-hearted, inspirational balladry (Greatest Day, Hold Up a Light) and Shine-style twinkle. It is disappointing that they won’t run wilder now they must no longer pay lip service to the teen market’s prissy puritanism. Even so, there are some genuinely odd moments here. The cane-twirling ELO hoofer Hello has read the news today, oh boy – “looks like the cost of houses is falling/ but I don’t notice” – although this cavalier approach to current affairs seems to be caused by love rather than the Marie-Antoinette perspective of the successful pop star.

Orange’s impassioned How Did it Come to This sounds like a psychology manual on shuffle, throwing about words such as “neurotic” and “schizophrenic” – you never would have predicted it when they were smearing each other in jelly for the video of Do What You Like. It’s understandable, if saddening, that there isn’t more of this oddness in the music.

Exclusive: Take That is just a hobby for us now, claims Gary Barlow

Dec 6 2008 By John Dingwall

THEY are Britain's biggest-selling act, but Gary Barlow says he and his bandmates work just two days a week.

Enjoying the fruits of the biggest comeback in British pop history, Barlow and the other band members have just announced a record-breaking series of British stadium dates, including a third show at Hampden Park, in Glasgow.

But despite the hysteria surrounding his band, Gary says the lads treat Take That as an enjoyable hobby and spend the rest of the time relaxing with friends and family.

"It's not a lot of work, a couple of days each week really," he said of his band duties. "The record company would like to have us working a lot harder, but we have learned from experience to start with a good record and the rest comes easily. If there is one thing that has changed a little bit, it's that we've got a little bit lazy in our old age."

The band - Gary, Jason Orange, Howard Donald and Mark Owen - have had a phenomenal year, with ticket sales for their next tour set to top one million.

Currently No.1 in the singles chart with Greatest Day, Take That are also on course for a No.1 album with The Circus when tomorrow's chart is announced.

But Gary says the band, originally managed by pop svengali Nigel Martin-Smith, have taken complete control and refuse to get caught up in the hype.

"It's definitely a hobby," he said. "I don't think you should ever take this business too seriously. If you see it is a hobby, then it's something you enjoy and indulge in and that's what we do. The day it becomes a job, we'll give it up. When we're making records, that's a proper day's work. That's a 12 to 14 hour day.

"When it comes to TV work, it seems we are doing more than we actually are doing. We can get away with doing two or three TV shows in the UK and one TV show in Germany.

"Interviews and TV shows are very laborious things to do and a lot of them are very false. You go on shows like Strictly Come Dancing and you are singing to a backing track.

"You haven't even got your band there. It's the least enjoyable bit about it. Us going out to play live, writing a song or recording are the key elements."

Gary says the working hours laid down by the band enable them to see friends and family more often.

He has two kids with wife Dawn, Daniel, one, and six-year-old Emily. The couple are expecting a third child in the new year. Mark and girlfriend Emma Ferguson have just had their second child, Willow Rose. Howard Donald has two kids - nine-year-old daughter Grace from a former relationship and three-year-old Lola with his girlfriend Marie-Christine Musswessels.

Gary said: "One of the things we all felt when we started spending time with each other again was how much we missed the whole boys club.

"It's like what everyone looks forward to every weekend, going out and seeing the lads and spending an evening in the pub with some friends.

"We have that on a regular basis. It's balanced with our home lives because three of us have children and families.

"We do that then our hobby is going out and being Take That at the weekend and doing a few TV shows and a concert here or there."

GARY, 37, admits there were times when he felt a Take That reunion as a fourpiece would never happen.

"It was impossible to believe in," he said. "I often considered getting back on stage but couldn't see a way forward.

"I couldn't see a logical way back. That is why the whole story has been so incredible and it is why people feel so good about it. Our great fans that have brought us back and supported us after all these years and still remember us, gave us a chance to entertain them. We feel so privileged. It's hard to say without sounding corny, but it really is a great story.

"What really shocked us about the last lot of shows was when we walked out and saw everybody there, older fans through to young kids. It seems that no matter what age you are, there is something you can find to like about Take That which is brilliant for us."

Formed in Manchester in 1990, Take That sold more than 30 million records before splitting in 1996, a year after Robbie Williams quit the group.

Gary said: "It's so much better second time around. We've seen every side of the business after 17 years of doing it.

"I've seen the good and the bad. When you are in a position like we are in at the moment, we are so aware that we can enjoy every day because it's not going to be like this forever.

"When bands are at their peaks like this, they've got to enjoy every moment."

According to Gary, the bond within the group has also become stronger than first time around.

He added: "There's a real security in Take That. The security comes from having your three friends with you.

"If we were to measure our success in any way, that's the starting point.

"We are great friends, the four of us. We look after each other and there is a security when I look down the line and see that it's not just me, I've got my three mates there with me.

"Then I know everything is going to be fine. That's why we can enjoy it so much.

"When people ask us what has been my best moment in the last two years, some of my favourite moments are when the four of us are at the back of a plane on our own and we're having a chat and having a laugh."

Meanwhile, their old pal Robbie could one day rejoin Take That, according to Gary.

The lads have been spending time in Los Angeles with their ex-bandmate, whose career is currently in the doldrums.

"I think we are rebuilding our friendship," Gary explained. "We've seen him infrequently over the last few years since we've been back together, but we went out to LA at the end of our album process to mix the songs and we spent a lot of time with him.

"It was just the five of us. The getting to know each other all over again has started now and I don't know where that is going to lead.

"To be honest, when the five of us are together, the last thing we talk about is music. I think we're on that process of rebuilding all our friendships and we are all at different levels as well.

"We're all in contact with him. At the end of the day, he started the band with us, so we do have a link that is always going to be there.

We do care about him. He is the youngest one and the most unpredictable one. When we read things about him in the paper, we all still care about him.

"We are in the process of rebuilding our friendship and it's really nice to be doing that.

"We would love Robbie to come and play a guest spot at these gigs with us, but I don't know if it will be this next tour, I really don't.

"But I would never rule it out for the future. That's definitely an option."

Lily Allen Shut Down By Boy Band
Ever the over-sharer (see her video blog, MySpace blog, catalogue of topless sunbathing shots), Lily Allen's been a sport about tossing us morsels from her upcoming album, It's Not Me, It's You - posting snippets of new tracks on her MySpace and releasing a couple of music videos, including the October debut of "Everyone's At It" and last week's dreamy "The Fear."

As for what the pop star has been up to (professionally, any way) since Alright, Still, Allen recently opened up to the Observer Music Monthly about the making of her new album, which is expected in stores Feb. 10.
According to the mag's critic, Allen's new LP is "packed with singles" - many of which take on personal subject matter - and is as much of a genre grab-bag as 2006's Alright, Still, with "urban beats rubbing up against Carpenters tunes, French accordion followed by Madness jollity."

However, one of those singles in-waiting - "Who'd of Known" - had Allen unwittingly ripping off another UK chart-topper.

The track reportedly sounds just like overgrown British boy band Take That's 2007 hit, "Shine."
"But I didn't know when we wrote it," Allen told the OMM. "Greg [Kurstin, producer] just played the chords and I sang and we were like, 'That's great, really hooky.' Then when we played it back to someone, they pointed it out that it was, essentially, 'Shine.'"

(To Allen's credit, she did much of the work on the upcoming record in L.A. - where terms such as "Ivor Novello-award-winning single," "Gary Barlow" and, uh, "Take That" would raise nary a botoxed eyebrow.)

Instead of scrapping the track, Allen says she tried to turn the accident into her latest star collab, asking the group to team up with her on the song. Maybe they're just holding out for Robbie Williams, but Take That politely declined - but not before giving Allen the go-ahead to record the track despite its apparently glaring similarities.

"I was looking forward to doing a video with them, me and Mark Owen holding hands," she said of her disappointment.
