Every year, BBC Children in Need creates magic moments that raise huge amounts of money for disadvantaged children but this year’s appeal week will kick off with something a little different for BBC One audiences to enjoy.

To launch the 2009 appeal, Children in Need will stage a spectacular concert at the Royal Albert Hall put together by Gary Barlow, featuring Take That and a host of rock and pop’s finest.

The full line-up of performers and ticket details will be revealed in the autumn and all profits from the tickets and sales of recordings will go to BBC Children In Need.

THE success of Red Nose Day is down to you all.

The performers who make the show are magnificent. They give their time and do their best work for us for free.

But it is you who put your hands in your pockets and pull out the cash.

When I saw the astonishing amount raised this year, it was a mixture of jubilation and relief.

Jubilation that we broke our own record yet again - by an astonishing Ј13million - relief that again we'll be able do something about serious problems at home and in Africa.

For another year we have the power to fight against things like domestic violence and sex trafficking and to help old people and people with mental health problems.

We can help street kids in Africa, mothers who might otherwise die in childbirth and thousands of kids who might die of malaria.

Slap bang in the middle of one of the worst recessions the world has seen, people have donated more than ever - it makes me proud to be British.

This year was special for a few reasons. The three red nose designs, the gorgeous T-shirts and that Mount Kilimanjaro climb organised by Take That's Gary Barlow were really something.

After the documentary was shown on March 14, we opened the text donation lines, where people could send a text which would give Ј5 - the price of a life-saving malaria net.

In just 13 seconds more than Ј1million was raised. It was staggering. And Radio 1 alone raised Ј1.8million as DJ Chris Moyles skipped to the top of the mountain.

After folk saw those celebrities doing something so momentous for charity, they wanted to get involved.
Pride

Suddenly it was with a new sense of pride that kids went to school and people went into offices and did something silly or funny, or even slightly illegal. And raked in the money.

There are so many good causes that the money we raise goes towards. The Kilimanjaro climb in particular is helping buy a million nets to fight malaria in Africa.

And we now have money to spend helping thousands of brave young carers up and down the UK.

Although it's amazing how much we raise each time - more than one quid from every person in the country - it doesn't completely surprise me.

Through being involved with Comic Relief, I see year after year how passionate, and compassionate, people are when it comes to helping others.

Without you, Red Nose Day is just a TV show. But because of your generosity, it is so much more. I can't thank you enough.

Jay Hunt, Controller BBC One, revealed today at this year's autumn season launch (bbc.co.uk/bbconeautumn) that BBC Children in Need will stage a spectacular concert at the Royal Albert Hall put together by Gary Barlow, featuring Take That and a host of rock and pop's finest to launch the 2009 Appeal week. The full line up of performers and ticket details will be revealed in the autumn and all profits from the tickets and sales of recordings will go to BBC Children In Need.

"It's fantastic to be able to kick off BBC Children in Need 2009 in such a special way", said Gary Barlow, "I've always wanted to do something like this and I can promise a night to remember, a night that will, I hope, play a small part in changing the lives of disadvantaged children across the UK."

BBC One controller Jay Hunt said; "This year the very best of British musicians, led by Gary Barlow, will stage a spectacular night at the Albert Hall in aid of BBC Children in Need. We're thrilled to be working with Gary Barlow on this brand new addition to the Children in Need programming for BBC One."

BBC Children in Need CEO, David Ramsden said; "We are so excited. It's going to be a brilliant night and will help us make a difference to lots of young lives."

Ticket details and the full line up of performers will be revealed in the autumn. As Gary would say, "just have a little patience."

In 2008, The BBC Children in Need Appeal raised over £36 million thanks to the generosity of the public and the enthusiasm of fundraisers, schools and businesses across the UK.

For every penny BBC Children in Need receives from the public, a penny will go to a project helping to change the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in the UK.

We can reveal that Gary Barlow has asked Robbie to perform his new single, Bodies, at next month’s Children In Need charity extravaganza at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

And with Jason, Mark and Howard also lurking in the wings that night, surely they will all join for one little song?

Robbie and Gary have been working together for months trying to concoct something special.

And they figured that a Children In Need fundraiser was a fantastic reason to finally reunite. Robbie tells us: “Yes something is definitely going to happen. Me and Gary have been hanging out a lot lately, talking things over.

“It’s been absolutely amazing. I’ve always wanted to be in a band ever since we split.”

Robbie, 35, had considered rejoining Take That on stage while they were on tour. But he feared it might look as if he was trying to jump on their bandwagon. So this one-night-only special is ideal.

Gary has rounded up some top British talent to perform at the event, including Chris Martin, Leona Lewis and Mika.

When we asked Mika about Robbie rejoining the lads he said: “That’s what I hear. It would be great. I’m a real fan of Robbie and I really like his new single.

“I’ll be performing a duet. I can’t say who with yet, there are going to be a lot of surprises.

“Gary has done a fantastic job, it’s going to be an amazing night.”

A pity it’s just one night and Robbie is not Back For Good…
