| TEN years ago if Gary Barlow had found himself in a room full of rappers it would have been as awkward as Frankie Cocozza at a WI coffee morning.
But unlikely as it may seem, Gary is being embraced by some of the nation's coolest urban artists in his latest bid to raise cash for Children In Need.
Standing in a west London studio, Gary copes admirably with the urban handshakes and noticeable age difference as members of new group The Collective — including Chipmunk, Wretch 32, Tinchy Stryder and Ed Sheeran — arrive to record the new charity single.
Gary said: "It was all about getting the pop stars involved who young kids are listening to now.
"I played my part putting it together but I'm not on the song, I'm not cool enough.
"I didn't even produce it, that was down to Labrinth. They are the new generation coming through and they know what they are doing. Having me on it wouldn't have been right."
Tomorrow night Take That star Gary stages his second massive Children In Need Rocks gig.
Two years back he helped raise more than £2million for the charity by enlisting famous friends to perform at the Royal Albert Hall.
This year Gary, 40, has pulled together his best line-up yet to play the Manchester Evening News Arena — with Coldplay topping the bill.
It will also be the first outing for The Collective, the group assembled by Gary for the new charity single.
It will be the first time Children In Need have opted for a single with a hip-hop influence.
The annual fundraiser has become famous for comedy and novelty singles, including Patsy Palmer and Sid Owen's track You Better Believe It in 1995.
But this year Gary has broken with tradition by selecting Massive Attack's timeless hit Teardrop. Over the summer he hammered out emails to get his charity band together.
Sun readers suggested names for the group, before the artists involved chose The Collective as the winner.
Gary's fellow X Factor judge, N-Dubz star Tulisa Contostavlos, sings lead vocal.
Labrinth, the man behind Tinie Tempah's No1 Pass Out, produces. Other acts who signed up include Rizzle Kicks and Ms Dynamite.
Gary said: "Novelty singles are absolutely fine but this is actually a very serious charity — and that should never be forgotten.
"We might have a teddy bear at the front of it all but we are in the business of making money for serious causes.
"Children In Need said they would love to have something with a more urban edge.
"So I thought it would be lovely to do something with some of the younger acts. Especially as all the money raised is spent in our country and a lot of it goes towards helping underprivileged children.
"I thought what better than to get the idols of all these young kids and put them all under one roof and on one record. The kids will listen to what these guys are saying.
"We did our initial recording around the time of all the riots this summer. I remember thinking to myself, this is a double whammy.
"These guys are going to talk to the people before they get of an age where they'll be out there doing these bloody things. It really felt like we had to do this, this year."
Getting the acts together was like pinning jelly to a wall, but with some perseverance Gary succeeded.
I met him and The Collective in a west London studio in August to hear them crafting the track.
Gary was beaming with pride as they all showed up on time to record their parts.
He told me: "As you know, they're not the easiest crowd to deal with. They're really not. I must have sent a thousand emails just to get to the people I needed to get to.
"I'm used to it because I've done these things before. I'm used to doing group situations, I like it — it's a challenge. But it's not been easy. But bless him, Labrinth and his manager have been the key to the whole thing. I met up with them and they started talking to friends and all of a sudden the word started to get out.
"The music's the easy bit, it's the bit we do every day. My job on this is bringing the whole team together.
"Labrinth has done the production, Tulisa has done the lead vocals, we've had a couple of guys write the rap for the verses.
"The track, our reworking of Massive Attack's hit Teardrop, is really poignant."
It was the first time Gary had seen Tulisa doing her "day job" away from the judging panel on the ITV talent search.
He said: "Tulisa is on the main chorus and she sounds great. It's great for us she's not got a record out for Christmas. She's going to be a massive star.
"My working relationship with her is brilliant, really good. When the idea of this came up, I thought, 'Well, I'm on a chair next to her most of the day, so I'll just ask her.'
"And she was totally up for it straight away. She's a really instinctive girl. She knows immediately whether she likes something or not.
"It was her who told me about people like Wretch. I didn't know who Wretch was before this record but she said he was going to be big. What I wanted was for people to be here because they wanted to be here, not because someone forced them.
"I want people to understand what this event is about — turning a corner with this national institution of a charity.
"Children In Need is 32 years old this year and I feel like it gets forgotten about some years. That's what inspired me to do the concert. Doing this should take it to the next level."
Producer Labrinth, real name Timothy McKenzie, 22, loved every second of working with Gary on the project.
He said: "Gary might not think he's cool but ask anyone who saw the last Take That tour and they will say different. He's been an inspiration to us all. If we needed anything, he sorted it.
"After the riots, the urban scene didn't get the best respect out of it. I think this kind of thing shows people another side to us.
"I really believe this song is going to say a lot after what happened and even speak to some of the kids that were involved in the riots."
Earlier this year Gary signed off from Take That's biggest ever tour, Progress Live, pocketing a fortune in the process.
He says that gave him even more inspiration to hand something back. "You know what it's like, we all try to do our bit because we all feel guilty," he added.
"We sell records and earn lots of money. And at some point, you think s**t, I need to do something now. I'm a lucky b*****d. There are a lot of talented people but we've got to give it back.
"This is our country, I'm a big fan of Britain and all the money raised here helps make it a great place to live. So this seems like a really natural thing to do. I'm going to be on TV over this winter and I haven't got any products out, so it's going to be great to do something worthwhile.
"I want people to buy this record not just because it's a charity record, but because it's a good record. It's a great track."

Event Information:
The evening will contain surprise guests and Appeal Films of the work BBC Children in Need does with disadvantaged children in the UK, as well as the spectacular line-up. There will also be some never-before seen surprise collaborations in honour of the event. Children in Need is an annual British charity appeal organised by the BBC. Since 1980 it has raised over £500 million. The highlight of the Children in Need appeal is an annual telethon, held in November. A teddy bear named "Pudsey Bear" fronts the campaign, while Terry Wogan is a long standing host. Children in Need is one of three high-profile British telethons, the others being Red Nose Day and Sport Relief, both supporting the Comic Relief charity.
The telethon features performances from many top singers and groups, with many by celebrities also appearing on the seven-hour long programme performing various activities such as sketches or musical numbers. Featured celebrities often include those from programmes on the BBC's rival ITV network, including some appearing in-character, and/or from the sets of their own programmes. A performance by BBC newsreaders has become an annual fixture. Stars of newly-opened West End musicals regularly perform a number from their show later in the evening after "curtain call" in their respective theatres.

да завтра будет концерт и трансляция, а сегодня он с Маркусом и Крэйгом поехали на балл в отель Хилтон в Манчестере :D, где Гари будет ведущим :D. Вот что у меня получилось

| TAKE THAT star GARY BARLOW is convinced his charity single featuring several rappers will inspire youngsters to chase their dreams after a summer (11) rocked by riots.
The singer formed a new band called The Collective - made up of famous faces including Chipmunk, Tinchy Stryder and N-Dubz frontwoman Tulisa Contostavlos - for this year's (11) official track to support Children In Need.
Teardrop was recorded in August (11), and Barlow admits watching news coverage of young rioters looting shops and causing chaos in cities including London and Manchester made him realise the potential power of the song.

| For a man organising one of the biggest concerts Manchester has ever seen, Gary Barlow is awfully relaxed.
"It’s all going smoothly," he tells The Diary. "It’s a bit worrying actually. We need more chaos."
The Take That frontman and X Factor judge is remarkably calm ahead of tonight’s Children In Need Rocks at the MEN Arena.
The event will feature performances from the likes of Lady Gaga, Coldplay, Elbow, JLS, Michael Buble and Gary himself. It will be shown live on BBC1.
"This is going to be the biggest musical event on TV this year," says Gary. "We’re going to light up Manchester. You expect a few last minute hiccups but so far everything is going great. It’s going to be a brilliant show, encompassing every kind of music.
"What we are trying to create is a one-off performance of the like people will have never have seen before or see again."

Gary, who hosted last night’s gala dinner, has taken on responsibility for organising the musical spectacular. So how has he found managing the egos of some of the most famous stars in the world?
"It’s strange because as soon as you say those words, Children In Need, everyone puts their egos to one side.
"Even the biggest stars recognise it’s an opportunity to do some good.
"I guess that’s a reflection of how people value this wonderful charity."
The 40-year old is one of the best connected men in showbiz. Not everyone could persuade international superstars to perform at a charity gig.
"It’s quite hard getting people together. I decided to start at the very top and work down. I aimed for Gaga and Coldplay.
"Once you get them, everything else falls in to place and thankfully within a week I heard positively from both."
But how do you get in touch with Gaga?
"I was able to email her directly. Luckily she was in England at the right time.
"She is the biggest star in the music world at the moment and it’s fantastic she has agreed to take part."
Gary has masterminded the entire concert, from booking guests to arranging the set-lists and devising the staging. It’s a big task for a man who already has a busy diary thanks to his Take That commitments and his work on The X Factor.
"There’s a lot involved. I did another of these concerts for Children In Need two years ago at the Royal Albert Hall in London. I was asked to do it last year but didn’t have the time so I said I’d come back this year. I think once every two years is enough. It’s a real scramble but Children In Need is a brilliant charity so you don’t mind the hard work."
And he was determined to bring the event to Manchester this time. "I said I would only do it if we could take it out of London. London gets everything.
"Manchester was the obvious choice because it’s where everything started for me 21 years ago and I’ve had some fantastic gigs here."
The only problem Gary faces is what to do about his duet with Cheryl Cole. The Girls Aloud star was due to perform on stage with him but has fallen ill. "We’re going to have to do something else. But these things happen."
