| Tulisa Contostavlos has admitted that Gary Barlow is not quite the softie that everyone imagines him to be.
The N- Dubz singer has become close to the Take That frontman ever since they were both appointed as new judges on The X Factor earlier this year. When Take That rose to fame, Robbie Williams was seen as the ‘bad boy’, Mark Owen was the ‘cheeky chappy’ and Gary Barlow was the ‘nice one’ that you could bring home to meet your mum over Sunday lunch.
However, Tulisa has claimed that the perception isn’t quite accurate and in an interview with The Independent speculated that people might be surprised by how tough the dad of three really is.
She said:
“He’s lovely, but because he is so passionate about his music he actually gets really offended if someone comes on and they are terrible, so he’s the harshest judge.”

| X FACTOR judge Gary Barlow reckons a Scouser will win this year's series after he was blown away by the Liverpool auditions.
It is the first time the X Factor has ever held auditions on Merseyside - and Gary is convinced that's why the standard was so high.
The Take That star, 40, said: "Liverpool and Manchester have been the stand-out cities for me.
"I think the fact that the show has never done auditions in
Liverpool before has really brought out the best talent.
"Overall, I'd say there have been about ten acts which have really stood out for me."
Gary shrugged off criticism of the new judges, saying that he, Louis Walsh, Tulisa Contostavlos and Kelly Rowland are the most relevant panel that the show has ever had.
Gary, right, said: "Louis has already proved himself as the longest-standing judge so I'm aware that all eyes will be on the new judges to see what we will bring to the table.
"I just want to be here to help people and I want them to be able to look up to me and be able to say to me, 'Tell me, do I do this or this?'.
"I suppose in terms of who they could have picked to be the new judges alongside Louis, there's no one more valid than me, Kelly and Tulisa - because we're out there doing it right now.
"We're selling tickets, we're selling records. We're out there doing what these guys want to be doing."
The dad of three admits that the auditions remind him of his early days with Take That back in the 90s.
He said: "The very young auditionees definitely take me back to when I started out in the music industry. They bound on to the stage, so full of energy, and it really reminds me of my teenage years. They come on and they are so excited.
"It's great when you get good ones because you know you could help them on to the next stage of their career. It's a good feeling."
Asked what quality he's looking for, he said that being a good vocalist is by far the most important thing.
He explained: "They have to have a really good voice - because without that it's very hard to think where they would go.

"They need to have the passion, the personality, the stage presence - I'm looking for the overall package. But, basically, if someone came on stage and just had an amazing voice and they just keep their eyes shut, then that would be enough for me.
"I think that over the next few months we could train the rest into them."
And Gary already knows which category he'd like to work with - he's desperate to mentor the boys.
He said: "I think there are lots and lots of strong contenders in the boys' category."

| TO his army of fans he is the mild-mannered hunk behind some of Take That’s most heart-rending songs.
But Gary Barlow is about to shatter that nice guy image as he takes over the mantle of Mr Nasty on X Factor from Simon Cowell.
And viewers who feared the talent show might lose some of its edge with the departure of its original King of Mean need worry no more – the singer has already shown he can be just as caustic as Cowell when it comes to weeding out those not up to scratch.

One unfortunate character was told: “You’re everything this competition doesn’t need. You have no talent.”
During a heated exchange with another wanabe, Gary snapped: “Will you just shut your mouth?”
And viewers will see him jump to his feet, take to the stage and eject a group by force who refused to leave.
Unlike his fellow judges – Tulisa Contostavlos, Louis Walsh and Kelly Rowland - Gary never let his emotions get the better of him during the auditions, despite seeing some “amazing” raw talent. Xtra Factor host Caroline Flack revealed: “They have all cried except Gary so far. That’s our mission… make Gary cry.” But the 40-year-old insisted he is not being mean just for the sake of it. In his first interview since taking over Cowell’s role on the show, dubbed X Factor: The New Generation, Gary said: “If I’ve disliked a performance, I’ve told them I didn’t really enjoy it. I don’t think it’s about dashing people’s hopes, it’s about being real with them.”
And he took a swipe at former judges Sharon Osbourne or Dannii Minogue, claiming he and the rest of the new panel are more “relevant” for the show. Gary said: “In terms of who they could have picked, there’s no one more valid than me, Kelly and Tulisa because we’re out there doing it now.
“We’re selling tickets, selling records, and we’re out there doing what these guys want to be doing.”
At the very first audition he even managed to upset show veteran Louis by taking charge of things.
Yesterday, Louis revealed: “After eight years on the show I was expecting to be head judge this year, but on day one Gary stole my head judge mug and sat in Simon’s old seat.”
Gary said he realises the future success of the show, which starts on Saturday, rests with the panel.
He added: “I’m aware all eyes will be on us to see what we’ll bring to the table. I just want to be here to help people.” Maybe he’s biased as a Cheshire lad, but Gary reckons Liverpool and Manchester provided the best calibre of contestant during the auditions.
The star, who is hoping to mentor the boys’ category, said: “Overall, there have been about 10 acts which have stood out for me. They have to have a really good voice, because without that it’s hard to think where they’d go. And they need passion, the personality, stage presence. Yesterday Gary sparked more anguish when he arrived for the first morning of boot camp and told 50 of the wannabe stars they were going home – before they’d even sung a note.
To gasps of horror, he told them: “We don’t believe everyone standing in front of us has the potential to make it all the way in this competition.” But dad-of-two Gary insisted he is committed to finding new talent. He added: “I’ve just played all these dates on the biggest tour we’ve ever done, and it’ll be nice for me to spend the next six months of the year finding the next big star.

One of Britain’s most successful singer songwriters and a member of one of the biggest pop groups of all time, Take That, Gary has amassed twelve UK No. 1 hits and is a five times recipient of the Ivor Novello award for songwriting.
Why did you decide to take on the role as a judge on this year’s The X Factor?
It always comes back to the talent for me. I wanted to be part of that process of finding a star. You can be sat through four hours of auditions and nobody grabs your attention, and then that one star walks out on stage and it reminds me of why I’m here judging. It’s kind of sweet for me, I’ve just played all these dates on this tour, the biggest tour we’ve done, and it’ll be nice for me to spend the next six months of the year finding the next big star.
How have you found the experience so far?
So far I’ve found judging very interesting, I’d always watched The X Factor and wondered how the auditions were done so it’s been fascinating to sit on the panel and be a part of them, I just find it really, really interesting. Every time someone walks on stage it’s something completely different from the last person, so the variety is immense and there’s not any point during the day where I think I’ve had enough of this now.
How is the new judging line-up working?
I think the new judge line-up is going really well and working well. I’m really enjoying everyone’s company. I hope viewers like the new line-up. It’s totally different from the last one.
Does watching the auditonees take you back to when you were starting out in the music industry?

The new X Factor judges have made no secret of how much they love working with each other. But it appears as though Kelly Rowland loves working with Gary Barlow that much more.
Admitting that she "blushes" every time she talks about the Take That star, the former Destiny's Child star told Grazia: "I can hardly talk to Gary without blushing.
"He is sooo handsome, and sooo charming. But I know he's married - I've met his wife, and she is lovely. And girl, she has a nice piece of husband at home."
Don't beat round the bush then Kels!!

Now that Kelly Rowland is on The X Factor, we’re supposed to find stuff that she says interesting, so let’s crack straight on with this new interview she’s done with Grazia.
Embracing the starry trend with this awfully floaty number, Kelly gushed about her new crush – none other than the main man himself, Gary Barlow.
Kelly said: “I can hardly talk to Gary without blushing.
“He is sooo handsome, and sooo charming. But I know he's married – I've met his wife, and she is lovely. And girl, she has a nice piece of husband at home.”
If we were Gary’s wife, we’d be planning to watch the hands under the table very carefully on Saturday night. You know, once we’d finished curling up in a ball in the shower, thinking over and over ‘why oh why did I marry Gary Barlow?’.
Kelly also did a bit of talking about the new series – which starts this weekend – and how couldn’t be less bothered about being better than Cheryl and Dannii. She said: “I'm not scared, I'm excited. I'm not intimidated. Not at all. I know Cheryl is the nation's sweetheart. But I'm not trying to be Cheryl, because Cheryl does Cheryl best. I'm not trying to be Dannii, because Dannii does Dannii best. I'm just going to be myself.”
