The Take That singers took to the stage at a show at Twickenham Stadium to benefit the Help For Heroes charity, which supports members of the British armed forces. The pair shared an emotional embrace before performing their new single Shame for the 60,000-strong audience, which included Britain’s Prince Harry.

Robbie was extremely emotional when he introduced Gary to the stage, saying the onstage reunion was one of the highlights of his career so far.

“Have I got a treat for you, this is one of the most amazing moments in my professional career so far,” Robbie said. “It has been 15 years in the making. My wife calls him my boyfriend, I call him my captain, you call him Gary Barlow.”

Shame is written about Robbie and Gary’s relationship, which soured in 1995, leading Robbie to quit Take That to pursue a solo career. Take That broke up the following year, but Gary, Howard Donald, Jason Orange and Mark Owen reformed in 2005.

Robbie started talking to his former bandmates again last year and announced he would be joining them for an album and a tour earlier this year. The album is due for release early in 2011, with the tour planned for June.

James Blunt, Alexandra Burke, Tom Jones, Pixie Lott, The Saturdays, Peter Kay and Alesha Dixon also performed at the Help For Heroes show.

The crowd cheered as the Take That frontman entered the stage and Robbie bowed down to him. The pair, who were both wearing black, hugged during the chorus.

Robbie, who was headlining the concert, said: "I am honoured to be a part of this show and to help draw attention to the amazing job done by our servicemen and women throughout the world. Their dedication to our country is phenomenal and we are all so proud of them."

The concert also featured performances by Enrique Iglesias, James Blunt, Alexandra Burke, Pixie Lott, Plan B and The Saturdays.

Comedians including John Bishop, Jack Dee and Peter Kay also signed up to host the event which featured a guest appearance by Bruce Forsyth.

Free tickets were given to injured members of the armed forces and their carers.

The Angels singer, 36, was seen by 60,000 fans at London’s Twickenham Stadium and live on telly by millions more popping a tablet into his mouth between songs on Sunday night.

Moments after his climactic reunion duet with Take That bandmate Gary Barlow, 39, the star, who has a long history of drug problems, was seen taking a blister pack from his pocket.

He then launched into a rendition of his hit Feel, where he forgot some of his lyrics, and seemed unaware of the controversy his behaviour could spark.

Within moments concerned fans had taken to Twitter searching for answers.

Simongreening tweeted: “Did Robbie Williams learn nothing from X Factor, don’t forget your own lyrics! And what did he eat just before this song?”

Chealer88 responded: “Robbie Williams just squirted powerade into the audience at the helptheheroes concert after forgetting his words and popping a pill.”

And Chris Stroud added: “Why the hell did Robbie Williams just pop a pill while on stage and they broadcast it?”

Robbie has admitted that at his lowest ebb he was downing a “heart-stopping” cocktail of prescription drugs and did not care if he lived or died.

He credits checking into rehab in 2007 and meeting new wife Ayda Field, 31, for getting back on the straight and narrow.

But the singer’s behaviour on Sunday night had some of his fans fearing that he may be heading back to his self- destructive ways.

Other stars at the charity gig included Sir Tom Jones, 70, Alexandra Burke, 22, Pixie Lott, 19, and Alesha Dixon, 31.

Kate Maysh, 27, from Staines, Surrey, said: “Robbie is a character whose personality always appears balanced on a knife edge, but it’s that vulnerability that makes him so popular.

“His fans are so pleased to see him settled and looking happy. No-one wants him going back to his old drug-fuelled behaviour.”

Last night a spokesman for Robbie insisted that the singer had simply taken a throat sweet to ease his voice.

A source close to the star added: “Robbie is a little embarrassed if people have got the wrong end of the stick. The pill was just for his throat. He often takes them during gigs.

“There is no way Robbie would go back to drugs. He is in a better place now than he has ever been.”
