He had dreamed of singing, but was petrified until mum Eileen persuaded him.

Joe said: "I loved karaoke but would never get up and try. One night I plucked up the confidence and sang Angels - and I never looked back."

The song helped Olly Murs to the final where HE duetted with Robbie.

Joe said: "I didn't mention Angels. Olly was more suited to Robbie, and singing with George Michael was out of this world."

Olly, 25, became chums with the ex-Take That idol as they teamed up for their memorable X Factor duet.

Since then Robbie has bombarded Olly with texts and calls - including an invitation to play on the private soccer pitch installed in his Los Angeles garden.

And Manchester United fan Olly, who missed out to Joe McElderry in the ITV talent show's final, is also signed up to play in next year's Soccer Aid with the Robster at Old Trafford.

He said: "Robbie's a really good mate of mine now. Great lad - we just clicked straight away.

"He rang me and told me he was gutted I didn't win, but that he wishes me all the best.

"He wants me to go to his house in LA after the X Factor tour. He's got a football pitch in his garden and wants me to come over and play football with him.

"He's invited me to Soccer Aid as well, which I'm really chuffed about. I'm living the boyhood dream - I'm going to play at Old Trafford and I'm a massive Man Utd fan. Robbie was amazing to work with and it's been an absolute pleasure."

Olly's duet with 35-year-old Robbie got him through to the second stage of last weekend's X Factor final, where he was ultimately pipped by Geordie Joe.

While thrilled for his 18-year-old rival, Olly admits he is devastated that HE didn't get a chance to top the Christmas charts.

With Joe's single The Climb battling for the top spot, Olly said: "The song's brilliant - and fitting for someone born of the show.

"Listen, I was on The X Factor to win it and I wanted to have that single as my single. I wanted to get the Christmas Number One - I might never get another chance."

Though if he gets the chance to sing with Robbie again, that dream could yet come true.

Olly said: "I'd love to work with Robbie more - maybe a Christmas duet for next year!

"But I've got to get a couple of albums under my belt for now.

"If he asked me to support him I'd be over the moon. He's an incredible guy, "But I've got to focus on getting a pop career now or I'll have nothing to sing."

Despite missing out on the crown, Olly is thrilled for his chum Joe, who he says will beat the anti-X Factor campaign to top the festive chart.

He said: "Joe WILL get the Christmas Number One. He deserves everything.

"I'll buy as many copies as it takes. He's going to be phenomenal. He's going to be really massive."

Robbie Williams' dad PETE CONWAY has thanked SIMON COWELL for giving his son back his very own X factor.

The usually tight-lipped Pete, 73, says that Simon's invitation to the Robster to appear on his ITV1 show The X Factor has done the up-anddown singer a power of good.

Though Robbie's duet of Angels with runner-up OLLY MURS was dubbed shambolic, his pa said: "He was given the opportunity by Simon and it was his chance to show what a star he is.

"It made his comeback and he loved every minute of being on the stage in front of all of those people."

Clearly full of the festive spirit, Pete continued in a rare interview: "There have been some very tough times for Robbie but he's got through them and now he is happier than ever.

"The Take That reunion has also been fantastic, it has given him a boost."

Robbie, 35, came under fire from X Factor fans who claimed he fluffed his words at the beginning of his hit song but Peter says it has kickstarted his career. Pub entertainer Pete has just begun panto in Robbie's home town of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs, where he is playing Alderman Fitzwilliams in the Regency Theatre's production of Dick Whittington.

While Pete has chosen to keep a low-key profile in Stoke after his son emigrated to Tinseltown, he admitted staying very much involved in Robbie's life.

And he is thrilled the singer has fallen for stunning actress AYDA FIELD, 30. Pete added: "Robbie's very, very happy with Ayda and I really like her, she is a beautiful girl.

"Robbie has fallen head over heels in love with her and it's lovely to see. She's one of the family."
