Simpson's Castlefield scheme rejected Ian Simpson Architects' revised residential proposals for Jackson's Wharf in Castlefield, Manchester, have been rejected – to the delight of heritage campaigners. Protesters – including Take That star and ex-local boy Jason Orange – claimed the 117-flat waterside scheme would damage any chance the Castlefield canal-basin area had of becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On Thursday (17 January) the city's planning committee went against its own officer's recommendations to back the huge project for developer Peel Holdings by turning down the designs. According to the Pride of Manchester website – which had drummed up support against the proposals – the scheme was 'the first to be rejected in the city centre in more than five years.' It went on to say: '[Had] the designs been approved they would have more or less ended Castlefield's tentative status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.' Peel Holdings was unavailable for comment and it is unknown whether the developer will appeal against the decision. здесь

| A MANCHESTER business headed by the brother of Take That star Jason Orange is targeting revenues of £100m this year as it steps up its takeover spree.
Simon Orange's acquisition vehicle Corpacq has completed its fifth deal in under two years with a swoop across the Pennines.
Following the buyout of Wakefield-based Filtermech Plant Sales, the group has turnover of £30m and employs 320 staff.
Corpacq, which operates from offices in The Chancery, Spring Gardens, has six more buyouts in the pipeline, said 40-year-old Mr Orange.
He established Corpacq in July 2006 with backing from private investors and bank funding.
Its first deal came in November of that year when it bought Leigh-based windows and doors manufacturer Regency Glass, a £6m-turnover company with 80 staff.
During 2007, Corpacq swooped for Metcalfe Plant Hire, of Penrith, Cumbria, which has 100 employees and sales of £10m.
Then it acquired Automate UK, a Leicestershire business which makes automatic entry systems for clients such as fast food chains KFC and McDonalds. Automate has 20 staff and sales of £2m.
That was followed by an investment in Manchester debt management business Chase Saunders Zengo, which has 40 staff and turnover of £2m.
Simon said Corpacq could complete several more deals before capital gains tax changes come into force in April.
"We are in a position to move quite quickly," he said.
As chairman he has assembled a management team which includes Gary Black, who previously worked at Manchester law firm Berg Legal, Puff the Magic Dragon, and ex-Nestle executive David Martin.
"Our targets are successful owner-managed firms or divisions of larger or public companies, with established management teams to whom we can offer support to grow their businesses.
"It is not our intention to come in and reorganise these firms - they are already we l-run by people with years of experience in their sectors. That has made it easier for the shareholders to walk away, knowing the existing management teams will continue.
"Some vendors have even become investors in Corpacq.
"We are building groups in plant hire and sales, building services and engineering and one of the options is to float one or more of those in due course, probably in one to three years' time."
Mr Orange added: "But we would want to retain ownership - we are buying firms to keep them and help take them to the next level."

We’re ready to move into a new place and everything is cool.” Despite scoring a No.1 album and No.1 single last year, Sugababes missed out on a Brits nomination – something they blame on the voting panel. Amelle explained: “We were a bit surprised. We deserved a nomination at least. “I imagine there being five bald-headed blokes scratching their heads, asking: ‘Who are these Sugababes?’ It’s politics.” Meanwhile, the girls are enjoying another sell-out nationwide tour. And their new single Denial is out now.

There was a bit of boyband mutual appreciation going on at the New Kids On The Block show at the O2 on Saturday. We spotted Take That's Jason Orange among the screaming girls in the capacity crowd. And New Kid Jordan Knight told us: "Back For Good is an amazing song. I've never met Take That but they seem really cool guys. "It's great they admit we influenced them. Some people don't think it's cool to admit they liked us back in the day."

The boys split in 1996 but he reunited with Gary Barlow, 38, Mark Owen, 37, and Howard Donald, 40, in 2005 after making ITV documentary For The Record. 'I was fighting it a bit, when we first got back together,' Jason tells The Observer Music Monthly. 'It felt the strangest to me, I think. 'I was not sitting that comfortably with it, and I didn't notice how nice it was.' Robbie Williams, 35, who left the band in 1995, decided not to join the boys for the reunion. But the others are now having a blast. 'We're all people pleasers, all of us,' says Jason, 38. 'Gary probably less so. He's probably the most secure in himself. Us three...f**king wombling bumbling idiots in the background, are not as secure. Not compared to rock Gary.'
