Is there life after Take That? For ex-Thatter Gary Barlow there is, in any case.
After the split of the very successful group Gary has changed his life drastically. The glamour and glitter are past tense for him and maybe even his dreams of gigantic chocolate bars are vanishing.
Hords of fans, a butler, expensive cars. This was the life of Gary Barlow during his time as the singer of Take That. Gary is glad that he is freed of the hysterics that surrounded Take That.
"I couldn't even go to a movie undisturbed. When on tour I couldn't even escape from my hotel. At the entrance hysterical fans stood time after time. Of course, all the attention was nice, but sometimes you like to go shopping like a normal person or go to a discotheque. Everything was arranged for us. Now a days I have to get my coffee myself and that is wonderful."
Gary also changed a lot.
"I have fired my butler. I also sold a few of my cars. Eventually you can only drive one car at a time. I just don't like wasting money and don't have the urge anymore to be in the spotlights. In the past I was a true workaholic, but not anymore. I give all my spare time now to Dawn, my girlfriend."
Gary eyed dancer Dawn Andrews (27) while working together on the last Take That tour. In the meantime he lives with her in a delightful villa.
Gary is a real familyman. His parents and his brother live with him on his estate.
"I love to have my family around. My father runs the estate. He never lets anyone leave without a basket of eggs. Sometimes I get the feeling I'm living in a zoo. My brother Ian is raving mad about birds. Recently he came to me with a eagle. My mother keeps a donkey in her backyard. Furthermore there are peacocks and cows around here. I am very happy with this quiet, rustic life at the moment."
Besides a new life, Barlow also gained a new look. Where he was pestered by persistant fat-rolls in the past, now he has a slim-lined body with a muscular tummy. This metamorphosis wasn't easy, but Gary thinks he might been seen now:
"I think my body really looks good now, but it will always be a struggle. I do like good food. I even dreamed I slept on a gigantic chocolate bar. I woke up licking my pillow. That's pathetic ain't it?"
Where the other boys of Take That were worshipped for their bodies, Gary was worshipped for his singing qualitys.
Gary: "The photographer had to perform many tricks to make me look fat-roll-free on the pictures for the Everything Changes CD. I feld so ashamed! Over and over again they told me I was getting too fat. They even laughed at me behind my back. During photoshoots, my manager got told right away that the pictures were a failure because my double chins showed clearly again. For a long time now I have been dieting and of course I do a lot of sport. But the result is great! Now I can be proud of my body. Now I can have a laugh at anybody else."
The firing of his manager Nigel Martin-Smith, the man behind Take That, was a horrible experience for Gary.
"Sometimes you have to make difficult decisions. And you can hurt people in the process. I have choosen for myself now and sometimes you have to be hard. I'd like to break the US, but Nigel didn't see anything in it. My attorneys have handled the case. I didn't have the courage to fire Nigel myself. We haven't spoken since. But Nigel is the man that made me what I am today, which I will never forget. I don't know if we'll ever get together again as friends."
As replacement to Nigel is no less then Simon Fuller, the man behind the Spice Girls. For breaking America Gary also hired Clive Davis. Not a small guy either; he is the man behind the success of the likes of Bruce Springstein and Whitney Houston.
Gary: "I searched a long time for a new manager. In my opinion I can't go wrong with Simon and Clive. They have made so many people famous....."
Now Gary is working on his solo career, he feels a lot of pressure: "Take That had 8 number 1 hits and 4 number1 albums. I have to match that and that is a very hard task to follow. People expect so much of me."
But Gary won't have to worry, because his latest single Love Won't Wait has become a number1 hit in England already and is showing well in the hitlists here (Holland) already. Love Won't Wait is written by Madonna. The singer laughs: "Madonna didn't write it especially for me. We hardly know eachother. But I've admired her for years. It's wonderful what Madonna has achieved. Love Won't Wait is another indication of her skills. Watch it. Love Won't Wait will become an absolute top-5 hit in your country!"

| Август 99
Firstly, apologies that the August update is a little bit late. I've been travelling a lot lately (mostly Germany) and what with one thing and another I haven't had a chance to put pen to paper (not literally!).
Anyway, August was the month for Roadshows. I ended up headlining a Red Dragon in Cardiff, Fox FM at Silverstone, GWR in Luton, Key 103's Mardi Gras in Manchester ( more about that fiasco later) and the Radio City Roadshow in Liverpool. I have to say that It was fantastic seeing so many familiar faces at the Roadshows - how do you always manage to get right to the front of the stage? It's impressive, I'll give you all that...
I guess I should explain about the Mardi Gras in Manchester (much as I want to forget it), as my set was a complete disaster. The way the Roadshows work is that all the groups perform to backing tracks as there is no way that the event organisers can set up everyone's equipment so that you can play a fully live set as there is only 5 minutes changeover between artists. Anyway, to cut a long story short, for the first time ever, my backing track jumped and skipped all over the place because of a technical fault. Every time the track stopped, I tried to sing only to be interrupted by the sound technician trying to start the track again. This happened about 5 times and I have never been so embarrassed in my life. I apologise to all of you who made the effort to come and see me - what a nightmare!!!! Oh yeah, and cheers to all the newspapers who decided to make fun of me the next day saying that I can't sing live (nice!!!!!) If any journalists are in any doubt about my singing abilities they are welcome to come and see me for a one to one performance. Luckily, the City FM Roadshow which I did right afterwards was fantastic and the crowd were brilliant - there is a God!!
In the middle of August I went off to film the video for 'For All That You Want' in Marlborough, England. I usually find shooting videos pretty boring but this one was top! The story is that a bunch of friends discover a deserted house whilst out on a walk that's full of old fairground equipment. We all start messing about with the equipment (what a hardship!) and then we stumble upon the Dodgem Cars. Apparently, I smile more in this video that in any other and I can tell you now that it's all down to the bumper cars. I love the Dodgems - in fact, the director couldn't keep me away from them - and all in all I had a brilliant day out which was a turn-up for the books.
The other two exciting things that happened in August were going over to Amsterdam for a few days and the delivery of some new equipment for my studio at home. Firstly I'll talk about Amsterdam. I had to pick a place that I love so that the holiday programme could film me there. Well, it was tough choosing between Amsterdam and Venice, which are two of my favourite cities, but Amsterdam won the day. Basically when you watch 'Holiday Heaven', I'll be surprised if you see me doing anything other than eating because every corner that I turned led to one of my favourite restaurants (funny that!!). Mind you , the film crew made me cycle around the canals too and it was probably a good thing because I definitely needed the exercise. We love Amsterdam!!
Lastly, but no means least, when I returned home, my new Euphonix studio equipment had arrive and I'm afraid to say that this event eclipsed everything else that happened during August. It is true to say that I was in seventh heaven as the new centre section for my mixing desk was being installed (sad, but true) and without sounding like a studio bore, I just love anything that enables me to produce better records. Luckily, my management company left me, undisturbed, for a few days so that I could familiarise myself with the new desk and as I hate reading instruction manuals, it probably takes me longer than average to bear.
Anyhow, you'll be pleased to know that I have been inspired enough to write and demo six new songs already and as that's what this job is all about it can't be bad.
In fact, If you don't mind, I've got a couple of hours spare now so I'll just nip back into the studio, but I'll come out again before my September update's due, I promise!! Actually, I'm going to have to, because with the release of 'For All That You Want' looming I'm going to have a lot of promo to do...

BIG: Your first solo single Forever Love was dedicated to your girlfriend Dawn Andrews...
G.B.: It wasn't - it was just the press who said that. I wrote that song before I started going out with Dawn!
BIG: You're still with Dawn - any plans to settle down and have kids?
G.B.: Well, of course my career comes first and always has. I want to do two albums on the back of each other - it could take three or four years. If everything goes well in the States it could be longer. But while there are no children around, there's no pressure. The only reason I'd get married is if we had children.
BIG: Is that something you want to do?
G.B.: Oh, definitely. I want to be a dad. She's a bit older than me though, so I haven't long to go! I want four children, I want two violins, a viola and a cello!
BIG: Robbie reckoned you put back the release date for your single cos you were scared of the competition. Is that true?
G.B.: Oh, that's rubbish. I can't believe he's still saying things like that. Our record companies made it so that our release dates didn't clash. At the end of the day we've both got important careers now. That's real self-flattery to think I'd move my record for him. That whole situation around the first singles gutted me. I couldn't believe it. The Robbie thing ruined it all for me.
BIG: Have you spoken to him recently?
G.B.: No, not recently. I spoke to him at the end of last year and everything was cool.
BIG: Have you been spiced?
G.B.: I have been Spiced, yes. I've met them a few times because they have the same management as me. The first time was in LA and my manager said he'd take me to their album launch. Anyway, this limo pulls up outside the hotel and I climbed in and there they all were! Then they attacked me. I was Spiced!
BIG: What do you think about their success?
G.B.: I think they're bigger than we ever were. It's unbelievable, they've gone down in history. A rise to fame like that is so sudden it's frightening. I'm glad it didn't happen to us like that. It would have been too much to handle.
BIG: Who's your favourite?
G.B.: I like Baby Spice, she's the nicest. She takes time out to talk to me all the time - Baby Spice is the one for me. Looks-wise? Well, Geri is a good-looker, I think she's more my age, too!
BIG: We saw the pictures of you, Howard and Jason dressed up in Batman gear for Elton John's 50th birthday party. Whose idea was that?
G.B.: I was sitting in this Indian restaurant in Manchester with Howard and Jason and I said we could go as the Goodfellas or something in smart suits. Then Howard goes, 'Oh no, we need something more outrageous, I can see me as Batman and you as Robin, Gaz'.
BIG: So were you up for it?
G.B.: No! I said, 'I've done all that dressing up with the tours, you're not going to get me in that.' But by the end of the night, I'd been talked round. It was worth it just to see Dawn dressed up as Catwoman. But the fancy dress costume was so uncomfortable! Next time I'm going as a boring man in a suit.
BIG: Do you see the lads a lot?
G.B.: Oh yeah, especially Howard cos he was always my best friend in the band. I speak to him at least once or twice a week. Jason's my neighbour now. He lives five minutes away from me in my old house, so I go and see him whenever I'm back.
BIG: Tell us about the album...
G.B.: It's been a long process, probably the most difficult album I'll ever make cos it's such an important time for me. The music we did as Take That is what I'm most comfortable with, I'd like to think this album is the album Take That would have made if we were still together.
BIG: What do you do in your spare time?
G.B.: I watch telly, I'm into EastEnders. I go to the cinema a lot and I love being at home with the dogs.
BIG: Do your parents still live nearby?
G.B.: Yeah, they live 200 yards away - just down the back of the garden. They look after my dogs Jim and Jess when I'm away. The dogs love it, they're a bit disappointed when I get back cos they don't get fed on time.
BIG: What do you think of boy bands like 911 and Boyzone?
G.B.: I think they're great, as long as people enjoy their music that's all that matters - but I try not to meet these people if I can help it. I don't like hanging out with stars, it's a bit cliche. Do you remember that band Worlds Apart? They're massive. They're number one in France, I wish I was! Actually, I've done a French and a Spanish version of my next single So Help Me Girl. It's really funny.
BIG: Why?
G.B.: Because I want to be big in France. This girl came over from France and taught me how to do it. I was like 'Ahhh, oui, oui, bonjour.' The words don't actually fit but they say the same sort of thing.
