| As Gary Barlow prepares to return to Cardiff this weekend as part of his solo tour, Karen Price unearths 15 facts about the Take That and X Factor star
1. Gary Barlow was born on January 20, 1971 in Cheshire and says his love of music began at an early age. “I was one of those kids that’s forever dancing in front of the TV looking at my reflection,” he reveals in his autobiography.
2. He is a supporter of Liverpool FC and says that their anthem, You’ll Never Walk Alone, was one of the first songs he learned to play on piano.
3. In 1986, when Barlow was 15 years old, he entered a BBC Pebble Mill at One Christmas song competition with his composition Let’s Pray For Christmas. He was beaten into second place by Rhondda-born broadcaster and writer Carolyn Hitt.
4. Today he may be a successful songwriter and an X Factor judge but as Gary prepares to take to the stage of Cardiff Motorpoint Arena this weekend he says you can’t beat the feeling of playing live. “Playing live is my favourite thing and I haven’t played a solo show for over a year now. Last year (2011) playing two London shows was brilliant… so I thought right let’s get out and see the rest of the country!”
5. He received an OBE last summer for services to the entertainment industry and to charity. It came just days after he masterminded the Diamond Jubilee concert for the Queen at Buckingham Palace:
6. Gary teamed up with Andrew Lloyd Webber to write the Diamond Jubilee chart-topper Sing, which featured the Military Wives’ Choir and singers from the Commonwealth. He said the Queen was excited that the single featured people from all round the world.
7. The clean-cut family man says he “doesn’t care” if people dub him “boring”: “People can say what they like and it washes over me. A few years ago something like that would have killed me. But now I couldn’t care less.”
8. And he’s also pretty laid back when it comes to his sex symbol image, saying: “I’ve got a wife who loved me at 17st when no-one wanted to know me at all. It’s very nice but it doesn’t really change anything at all.”
9. He is married to Dawn, a dancer, and they have three children – Daniel, Emily and Daisy. Last year the family were devastated when fourth child, Poppy, was stillborn.
10. He is all too aware how shallow the music industry can be after going from mega success with Take That during the ’90s to being “washed up” when his solo career stalled when he was just 25. He says: “It’s like fashion. You can be in and everyone loves you, next minute you can be out and people won’t take your calls. It’s happened to me. When Take That came back (in November 2005) and it happened all over again to me I just thought: ‘Enjoy it while you can but don’t let it destroy you when it goes’.
11. Gary has performed in Cardiff many times before with Take That. Their last gig was at the Millennium Stadium in June 2011 and it featured Robbie Williams following his reunion with the band.
12. Gary says he’s thrilled that he and Robbie are firm friends after their public rift. “Rob is really incredibly sensitive. He’s changed. Big time. He’s 38 now. He’s a dad. He’s not the Robbie I knew. He may as well have a different name and a different face because he is a totally different person. It meant a lot to both of us when we made up.”
13. He may be a successful performer in his own right, but Gary’s record label, Future Records, recently closed after £4m losses.
14. Gary is renowned for his charity work and in 2009 he organised a climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro which raised millions for Comic Relief. He was joined by eight other celebrities – Cheryl Cole, Ben Shephard, Alesha Dixon, Kimberley Walsh, Fearne Cotton, Chris Moyles, Denise Van Outen and Ronan Keating.
15. He’s one of the most popular people on Twitter. In October 2011, he joined Twitter live on ITV2’s The Xtra Factor to build support for the contestants he mentored during series eight of The X Factor. Almost immediately he gained more than 300,000 followers. Within two months, he was being followed by more than a million fans.

| GARY Barlow has magic powers.
Whenever he starts singing - and it doesn’t matter which song - 3,000 women instinctively raise both hands in the air and sway wildly from side to side.
It’s like a giant aerobics class, but slightly sweatier and with a lot more screaming.
Say what you want about Barlow but the 41-year-old knows how to play an audience as well as he can write a tune.
It is easy to be cynical about someone who performs songs more middle of the road than white lines, an unashamed Royalist and who appeared as a judge on a Simon Cowell programme accused of ruining proper music, but any mickey-taking would be doing him a disservice.
For starters, I don’t care what your musical taste is - it is hard to deny that Patience, which signalled Take That’s second coming, is the complete pop song. Rule The World, Back For Good and Shine aren’t far behind.
Rarely can Blackpool’s Opera House have greeted a performer with such rapture. So loud were the screams, they almost drowned out the opener, Greatest Day.
It was funny to watch the few men in the audience caught between an urge to enjoy themselves and an acute awareness they really shouldn’t been seen enjoying themselves.
What Barlow did well was make sure it wasn’t just about the singing. He told gags, put himself down, made himself seem more one of us.
“Did you enjoy Christmas, Blackpool?” he shouted, clutching his belly before adding “everything’s just that little bit tighter”.
He introduced one song as being “from my second solo album, the one that sold 37 copies. I’ve got a load in my garage if you want one.”
Inviting top comedian Peter Kay on to stage for a 10 minute love-in (the pair singing the theme to hit cartoon Top Cat together) added to the light-hearted feeling.
But it was more about the music after the break, Barlow reeling off hit after hit, ending with a rousing Never Forget.
As he waved to the crowd one last time, you could almost hear the women in the audience swooning.
He and his music might be not everyone’s cup of tea but credit where it’s due – the bloke is superb at what he does and delivered a terrific show.
How good, too, to see one of the nation’s biggest stars in Blackpool. “What a beautiful venue,” he said, surveying the Opera House. “I’m so glad I came to Blackpool, I’ve wanted to play here for years.”
And there are plenty of folk hoping he’ll be back to play it again soon.
