Robbie Williams will return to Australia for the first time since 2006 to perform at this year's ARIA Awards, reports the Herald Sun.

The 35-year-old singer, who releases his new LP Reality Killed The Video Star in November, will perform his comeback single 'Bodies' at the Australian music industry event as part of a three-day promotional tour.

Other artists expected to join Williams to perform at the awards ceremony include Jessica Mauboy, Wolfmother, Jet and Empire of the Sun.

The ARIA awards will be held at Sydney's Acer Arena on Thursday, November 26.

BRITISH pop superstar Robbie Williams has answered an SOS to rescue Australia's music awards.

He has signed on to perform his comeback single Bodies at the 2009 ARIA Awards in November.

It is a massive coup for the cash-strapped event which will score a huge boost in its coffers and ratings thanks to Williams' megawatt star power.

The annual celebration of Australian artists spent several months negotiating a new television home for the awards at Channel Nine after longtime broadcast partner Channel Ten declined to re-sign their contract.

Williams' heralded presence on the Acer Arena red carpet and stage on November 26 will attract sponsors keen to bask in his celebrity.

Organisers have struggled to find the funds to underwrite the million-dollar budget needed to stage the awards and after-party.

ARIA's own budgets have been squeezed by the long-term effects of illegal downloading, with its chairman Ed St John admitting at the recent Hall of Fame event to honour Little Pattie, Mental As Anything and others that it almost didn't happen.

St John said yesterday it took the ARIA board "about five seconds" to accept Williams' offer to perform in a deal brokered by his Australian record label boss, EMI's Mark Poston.

"To be honest, this landed in our lap. Mark Poston asked if we would like Robbie Williams at the ARIAs and everyone said, 'Are you kidding?'," St John said.

"Pink's incredible appearance last year added enormous value to the show, so of course you would jump at a decision to have a superstar of that calibre again."

Until Pink, the ARIAs had tried to keep the limited performance slots for Australian artists to showcase their talents to the viewing public.

But the early announcement of Williams' inclusion means there will be even fiercer lobbying by label bosses to get their acts - including Hilltop Hoods, Jessica Mauboy and Jet - on the 2009 bill to perform to the millions expected now to tune in.

"Its been a subject that has divided the industry. There is a school of thought that if there are eight performance spots, they should all go to Australian artists because that is one of the purposes of the show, to promote Australian music," St John said.

"The pragmatic view is that a big international artist attracts viewers and sponsors.

"Maybe we've reached a point where we're past cultural cringe and can share our stages. This is about blockbuster entertainment."

St John also pointed out that most of the awards' memorable moments in recent years involved Australians - including Keith Urban and John Butler dueling on guitars and Silverchair's comeback, during which Daniel Johns spray painted PG 4 PM on the set.

Williams has sold more than 2.5 million records here and his arrival couldn't have been timed more perfectly with his long-awaited record Reality Killed The Video Star out on November 6.

Its first single, Bodies, hit the airwaves on Friday evening and is expected to be the most added track to radio playlists this week.

EMI will campaign for a No.1 debut on the ARIA singles chart for Bodies.

Williams will arrive in Australia on November 24 for a three-day promotional tour culminating with the ARIA awards.

Robbie Williams' comeback single "Bodies" (Virgin/EMI) is enjoying European-wide airplay on hundreds of stations, with heavy rotation in key territories.

The U.K. pop singer's track entered the U.K. Radio Airplay Chart, compiled by Nielsen Music Control, at No. 40 based on just two days' play for the week ending Sept. 5. It also entered national airplay charts at No. 49 in Denmark, No. 54 in Ireland, No. 61 in Spain and No. 68 in Sweden.

"Bodies" debuted on radio at 8am U.K. time on Sept. 5. The track is likely to appear in other territories' airplay charts this week. To date, the track has had 1,586 plays in four days across Europe.

The Virgin France station has had the track on heavy rotation, with 22 plays according to Nielsen Music Control. Stations in Germany - a major market for Williams - are also embracing the track, with top 40 station Big FM airing "Bodies" 17 times.

Commercial pop radio in the U.K. has also shown its early support for "Bodies," but the track has built much of its British audience via the two big BBC networks. National top 40 station BBC Radio 1 has played "Bodies" seven times, while national AC network BBC Radio 2 has aired it six times.

The single is the first from his new set, "Reality Killed the Video Star," which was produced by Trevor Horn. The album is out Nov. 9, following the Oct. 12 physical release of "Bodies" and the Oct. 11 digital release.

The album will roll out internationally around the U.K. release date, with a U.S. digital release due Nov. 10. According to his label, Williams has sold 55 million albums worldwide.

‘It’s terrifying. I want to find a way around it. I will do… it scared me – really really scared me.’

After the experimentation of Rudebox failed to click with his fans, Robbie Williams has returned to what he knows best with the long-awaited follow-up Reality Killed The Video Star by delivery a glorious pop album that wears its influences on its sleeves.

No Robbie album has taken as long to arrive after its predecessor (Rudebox came out back in 2006) and no album by the former Take That man has such a lengthy cast-list of songwriters (there are more than half a dozen collaborators), but the result is a set of songs that will remind everyone why he became so successful in the first place.

Trevor Horn’s production has given the album a fuller, richer sound than any of the artist’s previous releases, as Robbie unashamedly pays homage to some of his musical heroes. The Pet Shop Boys connection, which began with Neil Tennant’s backing vocals on No Regrets and continued on Rudebox’s cover of We Are The Pet Shop Boys, is evident here again on Last Days Of Disco (which includes the line “don’t call it a comeback”) and, most especially, on Difficult For Weirdos. And, having started his solo career with a cover of Freedom, Robbie returns to George Michael with the Amazing/FastLove-like Starstruck.

A reunion with Guy Chambers occurs on Blasphemy, while in other places the album has something of a Seventies feel, including lush orchestration throughout, hints of Transformer-era Lou Reed and, on Superblind, the vibe of Bowie’s plastic soul of Young Americans.

Robbie admits, “I’m at a turning point in my career,” and it is true that more is resting on this solo set for him than anything since his post-Take That debut Life Thru A Lens. But there are enough potential hits here to condemn the sales dip suffered by his last album to history.

U.K. pop superstar Robbie Williams has unveiled his new album, "Reality Killed the Video Star," at an industry playback in London.

New EMI U.K. and Ireland president Andria Vidler hosted two playbacks of the entire, 13-track album at the Hospital club in central London yesterday (Sept. 7). Virgin Records will release the album in the United Kingdom Nov. 9.

The album marks a return to Williams' trademark pop sound after 2006's more experimental -- and commercially under-performing -- "Rudebox." All of Williams' seven studio solo albums so far have hit No. 1 in the United Kingdom.

While lead single "Bodies" features a refinement of the more electronic sound debuted on "Rudebox," much of the album returns to the fertile, adult pop ground of Williams' previous smash hit albums "Escapology" and "Intensive Care." Album highlights include lush ballads "Morning Sun" and "You Know Me," the intricate wordplay of "Blasphemy" and the 1980s sound of "Last Days of Disco," which features the telling lyric "Don't call it a comeback." A confident-sounding Williams also experiments with some light psychedelia on "Deceptacon" and electronic dance music on the anthemic "Starstruck" and "Difficult for Weirdos."

With a signature production by Trevor Horn, the album also features song-writing collaborations between Williams and the likes of Danny Spencer and Kelvin Andrews, Brandon Christy, Craig Russo, Richard Spencer and Scott Rudin, Chaz Jankel, Fil Eisler and Williams' former song-writing partner Guy Chambers.

As previously reported, "Bodies" -- released digitally in the U.K. Oct. 11 and physically a day later -- has already made a strong start at European radio (Billboard.biz, Sept. 7). Plans for the album's American release are still to be confirmed.
