HOLLYWOOD A-listers and pop stars lined up with footie legends to raise £4million for a kids’ charity in last night’s Soccer Aid.

Around 75,000 fans watched England beat the Rest of the World 3-1 at Old Trafford, Manchester.

Will Ferrell, Mike Myers, Gerard Butler and Michael Sheen were among the celebs playing in aid of Unicef.

Kasabian guitarist Sergio Pizzorno scored first for the Rest of the World with a spectacular chip over ex-England goalie David Seaman. Teddy Sheringham injured Gordon Ramsay in a tackle and the chef was stretchered off.

Sheringham levelled the score before TV presenter Jonathan Wilkes — co-founder of Soccer Aid with best pal Robbie Williams — shot England into the lead.

Kevin Phillips rounded off England’s 3-1 win.

Mark Owen, Olly Murs, Joe Calzaghe, JLS’s Marvin Humes, Freddie Ljungberg, Jaap Stam and Hernan Crespo also took part.

The Government pledged to double the total raised through tickets and phone donations.

England's Soccer Aid skipper Robbie Williams backed his fellow captain Stiliyan Petrov at the latest charity clash this weekend.

Music icon Williams warmed up at Old Trafford before his team's match with the Rest of the World wearing a 'Support Stan' t-shirt.

The former Take That singer, renowned for hits such as Feel, Angels and No Regrets, showed his support in front of 75,000 screaming fans.

Petrov, of course, is battling leukaemia and his cause has been championed across the country.

Williams wasn't the only celebrity to don the t-shirt, Liverpool comedian John Bishop was also snapped wearing the top pre-match.

Williams and Bishop emerged victorious in the televised match, England running out 3-1 winners over the Rest of the World.

The game featured a host of Hollywood A-Listers, including Will Ferrell, Mike Myers, Gerard Butler and Ed Norton.

From the football world, there were former striker Kevin Phillips - who scored England's all-important third goal - Teddy Sheringham, Hernan Crespo, Roy Keane, Clarence Seedorf and Freddie Ljungberg on show.

Sam Allardyce and Kenny Dalglish managed their respective teams.

The event, organised on behalf of Unicef, raised £4m.

East Kilbride sports enthusiast Gavin McCann on Soccer Aid, a charity match organised by Robbie Williams.

After a weekend of scorching sun, I sat down on Sunday night to tune into Soccer Aid being beamed live from Old Trafford.

I was nursing my beetroot coloured skin with after sun and feeling a bit sorry for myself. Then came the pictures illustrating why Robbie Williams and Jonathan Wilkes founded this magical event.

Their tag line was "This should not happen."

Who could disagree after seeing street kids in Manila begging for food in the Philippines capital?

An allstar line up saw England beat the Rest of the World team 3-1 but the highlight, for me and many others, was Kasabian’s Serge Pizzorno’s goal.

The guitarist gave the Rest of the World side a first-half lead with a curling first-time chip over the England’s goalkeeper David Seaman – a truly professional finish from an amateur player.

He went on to receive the man of the match from Graham Taylor who cited his cool nerve in front of a capacity 67,000 crowd.

England went on to win with second half goals from Jonathan Wilkes, Teddy Sheringham and Kevin Phillips.

The host of stars on the pitch included Jaap Stam, Roy Keane, Gordon Ramsay, James McAvoy, Woody Harrelson and Mark Owen.

While it was a charity match, with all funds going to Unicef UK it got a bit feisty with Gordon Ramsay going head-to-head with both Paddy McGuiness and Teddy Sheringham, with the latter crocking the Celebrity Chef.

The whole ethos of the occasion was to help kids and some of the footage shown would break your heart. As much as football can get a bad name this is one event that should be a staple on the calendar and full credit should go to Wilkes and Williams.

There was around £5m donated via the British public and this can help ease the pain for kids all over the world living in abject poverty. They say charity begins at home but I was happy to donate a fiver to save a kid from cholera or help them walk again after suffering from polio.

What struck me was the great element of fun throughout, although it was a competitive match! I was urging the Rest of the World on as there were two Scots in the team, Gerard Butler and James McAvoy, led by Celtic and Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish.

At times we call get heated about our football and that’s just raw passion for the game. That’s what football is all about. The high, the lows, the winning and the losing.

The winners here are the kids from all over the globe and I’m already looking forward to year’s game.

But spare a thought and a few pounds for the children who probably know nothing about the event and will hopefully benefit.

In the grand scheme of it all and in modern, civilised times - “This should not happen.”

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom, 29 May 2012 – It looked like a script from Hollywood: the small lad face-to-face with the six-foot-plus enforcer. American actor Mike Myers was set against the former national football captain and brick wall of England’s defence for the Premier League for Arsenal, Martin Keown.

In a supporting role was American actor and comedian Will Ferrell, who delivered a ‘hospital pass’ to Mr. Myers – that is, a pass too close for Mr. Myers ignore but equally within striking range of Mr. Keown. The English hardman hit with force, flooring Mr. Myers. From the sidelines, American actor Edward Norton prepared to replace him. But Austin Powered to his feet. The crowd of 70,000 roared in appreciation.

Welcome to Soccer Aid, a remarkable event where celebrity collides – in Mr. Myers case, quite literally – with footballing legends in England’s grandest club stadium, all with the singular aim of raising money for the world’s most disadvantaged children.

Raising awareness and funds

Organized by ITV, one of the United Kingdom’s national broadcasters, and UNICEF UK, Soccer Aid pits the England team against the so-called Rest of the World.

Each side has its celebrities, and each side has its veteran footballing greats. This year, the Rest of the World fielded the likes of chef Gordon Ramsay and actor Michael Sheen (with Mr. Myers, Mr. Ferrell and Mr. Norton) along with soccer greats such as Clarence Seedorf (the only player to win four European Cups, and with three different teams), Argentinian great Herman Crespo, Dutch and Manchester United champion Edwin Van Der Sar, and perhaps the greatest midfielder ever to call Manchester home, Irishman Roy Keane. It was a formidable line-up, one confident they would retain the trophy they took two years ago when American actor Woody Harrelson scored the winning goal.

England came with the likes of singers Robbie Williams, Olly Murs and Mark Owen, and former England football stars Teddy Sheringham, Kevin Philips, and of course Mr. Keown.
The event was televised live across the UK to an audience of millions, with hours before dedicated to short films made with UNICEF Ambassadors and celebrity supporters, including Kiera Knightley and Lewis Hamilton, explaining the hardships children face across the globe. Throughout the game, millions of viewers were invited to donate £5 via SMS.

England player Jonathan Wilkes celebrates with teammates after scoring a goal in Soccer Aid 2012, in Manchester, UK.

Competing to help the most vulnerable

People were inspired both by the event and the commitment of the celebrities. “I listened to Mike Myers and Will Ferrell before the game,” said Jason Farmer from Liverpool, who came to the game. “They spoke about the children this was aimed at, the children we help just by buying a ticket and being here. It’s a terrific way to contribute, for me and the celebrities.”

The Government of the United Kingdom will match every pound donated. As a result, this year the money raised by Soccer Aid for UNICEF will reach large numbers of the most vulnerable children suffering in the food crises in East and West Africa. “They’re feeding kids, they’re educating kids, they’re vaccinating kids,” said Mr. Harrelson. “They’re an incredible organization, and this is an incredible event.”

On the pitch, the game may have lacked the pace typically seen at Manchester United’s home stadium, but the quality and competitiveness were there – as were moments of sheer brilliance. The first came when Sergio Pizzorno chipped England’s former number one, David Seaman, putting the Rest of the World in front. The goal roused England, and their legendary striker crudely clattered into Mr. Ramsay, who was stretchered off. Gerard Butler came on for Joe Calzaghe. Then Robbie Williams entered the fray, and screams of joy filled the stadium.

A shared commitment

In the end, England scored two more quality goals, winning the game 3-1.

The thunderous cheers from the crowd continued well after the final whistle, making clear that it was not the result they were applauding. The win was secondary. The crowd – like the millions watching at home – sensed they were part of something special, part of an event that will touch the lives of those who need it most, and a shared commitment to unite for children.

As families left the stadium, celebrities gave interviews, and UNICEF volunteers spoke to spectators about their organization’s work. A young boy was overheard saying to his father, “This was really special, Dad.” He right was on the money.

A short while later, UNICEF announced it had raised £4 million and counting.
